"Please,'" Bush whimpers, his lips pursed in mock desperation, `"don't kill me"

-- from the Houston Chronicle in 1999. I had never read this story, but it happened. Bush mocks people he executed. And these people call themselves Christians, or whatever they are.

So to the main point of my post. Today the Supreme Court determined it is unconstitutional to execute children under age 18. I was really excited about this, because I am strongly against the death penalty. My favorite part of the opinion is Justice Kennedy noting "the stark reality that the United States is the only country in the world that continues to give official sanction to the juvenile death penalty." Think about that. We are the country that know what's best for every other nation (especially in the middle east), but we were the only nation in the entire world that has such little value for human life that we want to kill children and our mentally retarded.

I wanted to tie this post into Bush's death penalty record in Texas. However, this new discovery by myself of Bush mocking the executed, has me to fired up to say much, without sounding like a huge ass. To summarize: 1) he killed minors, which is unconstitutional; 2) he killed mentally retarded people, which is now unconstitutional, 3) he mocked the dead that he executed, which is sick.

Few additional notes:
1) the picture of the chair is "Ole Sparky." This Florida death chair was affectionately named because it fails to work properly, so when people are killed, sometimes they catch on fire. Sometimes they are not actually killed on the first attempt (perhaps while on fire) so they must repeatedly execute the person.
Ole Sparky is so cute.
2) Today (March 1st) is International Death Penalty Abolition Day. Pretty ironic.

the lady he supposedly mocked was the lady who killed people with a pick ax. so who cares. i am not pro or anti death penalty.

but at the time texas used the death penalty on minors and the mentally retarded both were legal. other states did it as well, and today it was found unconstintional - so when it was done, he wasnt willing breaking the law. so at the time, really nothing that was illegal took place.

Governors have the greatest clemency discretion.
also, a man that claims to be guided by jesus does not mock pleas from a dying person.

we have all made completely out of line comments before, but he a) is the leader of the country, b) claims to be some sort of moral authority for the world

Well, it's an interesting topic. This is one topic that I've always been on the wrong side of the fence with. That is to say: Bush and I agree (kind of):
I have always supported limited use of the death-penalty.

It is still my opinion that people who killed innocent people for profit or pleasure should get hog tied and tossed in the river. I am not talking about an isolated incident, or a crime of passion. I am talking about people whose career or life long hobby has been killing.

After guys like Jeffrey Dahmer have had a fair trial and exhausted the appeals process, in my eyes they don't deserve a single tax dollar more. They are not reformable.

Only recently I have softened my stance. I can see how it could/can/is being over-used and worry about the implications it could have in this war on terror/march of freedom bull-honky.

So for the time being...I am on your side of the fence. But let me say this: I have no problem with the idea of Jeffrey Dahmer's shirt catching on fire as he squirms in Ole Sparky...in fact i think i prefer the idea.

For me, the Death Penalty (and Gun Rights) are tough ones to call. More soon.

I hate it, but know that a vast majority of Americans support it.

What is even worse about it, is the way it is administered. Those convicted of murdering a white person are 2 times more likely to get the DP. Plus, you have some states that do it once every 5 years, and then you have places like Texas where everyone gets it.

Plus it is a fact that soem innocent people have been executed. just one mistake does makes the entire system unacceptable.

and the thing i really hated about bush for it, was his rubber stamping the policy. ben said that he bush wasn't going to "break the law". well, as governor, you are the final authority. and in that authority, he must have used more discretion then he did. he did not. and there is an extremely high probability that Bush executed an innocent person in that carefree attitude.

I support the death penalty because some crimes deserve it. Our system may not be perfect, but I have yet to hear a case where it was administered where I would have had a problem. My problem with it follows Chuck's point about the uneven application of the DP. Also, why do states have to pretend like they are running fucking frankenstein's lab and kill people in electric chairs? Lights in the building flickering? People watching the execution? Why? Lethal injection, chemical injection, gas, poison... all more humane in my opinion.

Bush did not kill any minors...people who commit crimes as a minor like 15, sit on death row until they are at least 18 as I understand it ...if that is wrong someone correct me

I am so mad right now after reading this article. What an absolute joke this man is. calling him a man is not even deserving. I seriously hope that he rots in hell, no joke. What kind of human being would mock someone during their last minutes on this earth.

And ben, no matter what crime has been committed, nobody deserves to be mocked during their last breaths, especially from someone who is running for the presidency.

F___ him, what a joke Bush is. He is going to hell for shit like this and living one big lie.

WHAT A JOKE BUSH IS, HOW CAN ANY OF YOU SICK REPUBLICANS DEFEND HIM IN THIS CASE. if you do, you are just as sick, and twisted.

I'll say it again, somewhere in texas a village is missing its idiot. I think we may be able to find him on Pennsylvania Ave.

Well, sorry guys I haven't been an active member as of late. Moved into new apartment, and still trying to get used to my new computer. Its a Mac, so totally new for me. But, on to the subject of thed death penalty. I will stand behind what Bob and Kyle say. Kill those bastards who are just sick and twisted and don't deserve to live. People who preform premeditated murder for any reason should not live. Murders of passion or anything like that should be left in jail to dwell on their crime.

Now for Justin's post on Bush mocking someone during their last days is no problem for me. The bitch was killing people with a pick axe. Fuck that lady. I commend Bush for that. That lady, and people like her should be mocked. They should be dragged out like Jesus in "The Passion of the Christ". These people are a drain on society.

Personally, I disagree with Kyle on the inhumane ways the death penalty is carried out. I like the idea of people watching the death penealty. Of course, I like the idea of the family members, or whomever which is associated with the innocent partys death. They can finally get closure. And fuck yeah, Give them a little pain before they die. Torture them a little. Their gonna die soon, let them feel a little pain before they die. Give them a little taste of what they have done. Of course don't get carried away with it. I don't want an eye for an eye type shit, but ol' sparky doesn't sound to bad to me.

Well John, its good to see you back, but I can't agree with you on this stuff. I don't think its up to us to decide who lives and dies. I think that is left up to a higher power.
