Liberal Television
Current T.V. is a new television channel set to hit the airwaves next week. As reported in The New York Times, "Current aspires to be a channel unlike any other. Aimed squarely at people between the ages of 18 and 34, an elusive demographic that advertisers covet, the channel will rely for much of its content on submissions, both raw and edited, from viewers."
The channel is co-founded by Al Gore. You may remember him as the top vote getter in 2000. The channel's CEO is Joel Hyatt. You may remember him running for Senate in Ohio in 1994 or from his T.V. commercials for his law firm based in Cleveland. Notable investors include Richard Blum (Diane Feinstein's husband) and Bradley Whitford from The West Wing and Happy Gilmore.
I suspect this channel will have the kind of A.D.D. friendly political programming that our generation requires sandwiched in between ads for Mountain Dew, Trojan Condoms and Right Guard Extreme deodorant. Although, it will be entertaining to get my update on the John Roberts Supreme Court nomination or the effect of China's currency on global trade from some anchor in a tube top or a Lakers jersey. Here's a sample of the vision of the channel: "There's plenty to watch on TV, but as a viewer, you don't have much chance to influence or contribute to what you see. This medium - the most powerful, riveting one we have - is still a narrow vision of reality rolled out in predictable 30-minute chunks. It's still a fortress of an old-school, one-way world."
"If you're not Liberal when you're 25, you have no heart. If you're not Conservative when you're 35, you have no brain." Cute saying. Those of us twenty somethings who are interested in politics like to think about issues and will only watch a show or channel loaded with information. Current needs to cater to our brain and provide the kind of indepth content that the other 24-hour news networks are missing. (see The Daily Show) I hope this new channel does well and I will review it in greater detail next week.

This sounds like a great idea.
It is good to know that the left is ready to create a liberal news network without public funding, using public input instead.
I love Cute's quote about being a young liberal and an older conservative. I believe we are all born liberal; every young conservative has conservative parents. I too was liberal once, I especially loved John Bellamy; then reality struck, and I realized that the human race is far too stupid for liberal ideas to work.
(for proof of this, go check out our new energy bill, that doesn't actually adress any energy problems our nation faces, and instead is a bunch of pork, mostly for farmers)
everything thing i've read about the network says its not supposed to be left or right. in other words - this is not the answer to FOX, its seems to be mtv for news. good luck to gore - but i think this is gonna suck.

sorry i have a comment not related....
"Senate Republicans pushed ahead Monday with legislation that would set rules for the treatment and interrogation of terrorism suspects in U.S. custody, despite a White House veto threat."
This is a quote from an ap article posted on yahoo news.
What is wrong with bush? Seriously, what goes on in his head. I hope he blocks this, it will only make him look worse. In all honesty i would be scared if i were a republican, this president is not only out of touch with the country, but out of touch with a lot of his base. Keep it up GW, you are going win the democrats some much needed seats in 06'.
"I hope he blocks this, it will only make him look worse"
Don't say that. For the sake of your party, do not say that. It only confirms the over-used conservative arguement that the democrats are simply an anti-bush party with no good ideas of their own. For the good of the country, politics should be a battle of ideas, not senate seats.

in most cases you are correct i am trying not to do that, but who wouldn't want this bill, other than the people that are torturing the prisoners?
I mean that question seriously. It really would make him look bad if people see he vetoes this and says that saddam was so bad becuase he tortured people. see i am a democrate and to me a person is a person no matter their religion, race, or beliefs, nobody should ever be tortured.
Link to article Justin mentioned...
My big concern about holding these detainees indefinately is the effect it may be having on the battle field right now. If you are an enemy combatant on the battle fields of Iraq or Afghanistan, are you going to surrender to the U.S. given our record in Abu Ghraib or Gitmo? Of course not. You are going to fight to the death for your dignity and for your god.
I also think these minimum standards would protect our rank and file troops in the field. They aren't the ones who brought the hoods and electrodes.
I agree with John McCain. I also agree with Justin. President Bush should support this bill.
Quickly, back to Current T.V. and Tim's comment: given the investors, I'd be shocked if this channel isn't liberal. I mean, even if they just do the news like NPR it will be labeled liberal. As we frequently conclude, facts are liberal.
