Union Split: When was the last time the Unions made the news? It was probably the 1980's when Reagan fired the air traffic controllers. Hopefully these splits in the Unions will revitalize the movement. I say this for two reasons. First, unions are a big part of the base of my party and do a lot for our candidates. Almost every Democrat who runs for office will have some function of their campaign run out of a union building. They also give a sizeable amount of money and provide a lot of the muscle behind get out the vote efforts. Second, the issues unions fight for are the same issues that are part of what make me a Democrat. A living wage, work place safety, health care, child care, and general worker's rights are all issues that Democrats can win on if we would just do a better job of communicating our message. As Harry Truman said, if you want to live like a Republican, than you have to vote for a Democrat.click here for his site

Paul Hackett: I added a link to Paul Hackett for Congress to our right hand side bar. He is a Democrat running for OH-2, which is Rob Portman's old district just north of Cincinnati. Portman was nominated by President Bush to be the U.S. Trade Representative and there is a special election this fall for the open seat. Hackett would be the first Iraq war veteran elected to Congress and I'm so glad he is a Democrat. Check out his site.

China: "Suicide is the number one cause of death among people ages 18-35." Can you imagine more of our peers dying from suicide than any other cause? In the United States, it is the third leading cause of death among 15-24 year olds with the overwhelming majority being male. Unrelated, but interesting.

Democrat ideas are mainstream:

Click here for a fun ad about Senator Rick Santorum. I thought Jon Stewart gave him too much of a pass last night on The Daily Show.

It is hard for me to admit this, but I am a memeber of a union that belongs to the AFL-CIO.

I think the entire organization is completely corrupted. I have been eagerly anticipating this moment since I first heard rumors, and I was hoping my union (the UA) would join in, but given how corrupt my own UA is, I'm not surprised they will remain in the AFL-CIO.

33% of union employees in the AFL-CIO voted republican. I voted libertarian. But this organization has no qualms about illegally spending my union dues (and a penny per hour off my check) to support the democratic campaign. I'm sure they did the same thing to millions of others.

I wrote a letter and told my business agent to stop funding the democratic campaign, and guess what? I still payed.

My dues support a trade school that I take classes at, and of course, part of our curriculum is called "Herritage Class" where we learn all about how the democrats are right and republicans are evil, and how free trade isn't free, and corporations are corrupt. Then we talk for 10 minutes about how the president of the UA just lost 25 percent of the national pension, and is being investigated for recieving illegal kickbacks.

It's all bullshit.

I plan to finish my education quietly before I sue these bastards and start my own business with the settlement.
