Sad, Racist, Republican... Bill Bennett
September 28, 2005: "I do know that it's true that if you wanted to reduce crime, you could -- if that were your sole purpose, you could abort every black baby in this country, and your crime rate would go down. That would be an impossible, ridiculous, and morally reprehensible thing to do, but your crime rate would go down. So these far-out, these far-reaching, extensive extrapolations are, I think, tricky." - You must click here and listen to the audio

When people say "it's not my fault for what happened in the past" as a reason to not support race-based programs, an easy response is: "yeah, but it is your fault that you accept a society where assholes like this guy get a platform to speak to millions of Americans (and not to mention he is a major political figure)"
I heard that sound clip while listening to Howard Stern on my drive into work this morning..."morally reprehensible" to say the least.
I can try and reason out what this profound jack-ass was trying to get at form a statistical/mathematical point of view, but I really would rather not. It's really a shame that this guy tried to take the point that a reduction in unwanted and uncared-for infants/children has lead to a reduction in crime rates and distort it by making an off-base and ridiculously racist statement. He would've been much better off just taking the approach I use at work when I don't like the numbers I'm looking at and in turn say, "Figures lie and liars figure." Unfortunately, this play on words is probably far too complex for someone like Bennett to comprehend and he seems to be in direct competition with other radical broadcasters as to who can make the most audacious on-air comments and get away with it.
I heard it on Stern too. I had to find it.
So... because I live in America and I believe in free speech I should be held responsible for other people's crimes? I'm not sure I follow...
he can talk all he wants and say whatever racist shit he wants. I just think the fact that he has such a large forum to speak to, it shows the still-racist state of society.
Chuck, I defy you to name a single, solitary place in the world where no one harbours any hate-filled, biased, racist, etc. sentiments. It is a shame that a man of Bennett's nature and poor-character can be 'successful', but you cannot lump everyone in this country into the racist pile just because of some individuals' short-sightedness. Bennett's forum is just a testiment to the fact that the less you know about something and the louder you yell it, the more people are willing to believe you.
Bennett sucks. I don't listen to him. But I hope people don't censor him. I hope they just stop listening to his crap. That's the real way censoring should be done.
