Goodbye Moderate, Hello Radical
President Bush accepted Harriet Miers "request to withdraw" her nomination. If indictments are coming, this is clearly a move to make a concession to the conservative base who the Bush administration will need desperately. I'm sure the next pick will be a radical judge who is the darling of the far right of the Republican party. If there were no indictments, then they could fight for Miers.

The Conservatives did this.
The same people that bitch and blast Democrats for not respecting Bush's choices. How many times have I had to hear "elections have consequences" - "bush won, get over it".
Well, well, well, could it be hypocrisy? What a shocker! Now if Bush puts out some nut job, dems better knock her off....and Republicans better not have the nerve to complain about not respecting Bush's choice.

I agree Chuck. I heard Trent Lott last night bad mouthing Miers.
Is it possible that Bush&Co. had planned this all along?
Most Dems let Roberts pass untouched with the idea that “we’ll get the next one.” So Bush&Co got a close personal friend to play along, and circulated the word to select conservatives to protest the appointment, starting a media frenzy.
Now, this second nominee will seem hyper-qualified by comparison; Bush will seem to have been denied his first choice and made some concession; and the public is a bit more exhausted/less interested in the whole process, and less likely to make a fuss.
Is this crazy talk?
PS Great comment Chuck.
Ok, first of all, I agree with Chuck, the conservatives did this. And I aplaud themk for it. My hat is off to the rightwing media, because this woman was a terrible pick for a position of such importance.
And this has nothing to do with "elections have consequences." Nominating unqualified judges also has consequences, and in this scenario, the constitution gives the senate the trump card. There are certain safe-guards built-in to that document, so that elections don't have quite so many unwanted consequences. And besides, rumors have it that Miers would never have made it through the commitee, all the squabbling over fillabusters doesn't apply here.
Personally, I think it is fun to imagine the ways in which Bush could be trying to manipulate the public into allowing him to appoint a conservative, but I don't see how this could help him.
I disagree that the public will be less interested after Miers. I haven't conducted any polling or anything, but I think if anything, Bush has made this appointment much more dramatic, and what does the media love more than drama? (for christsake, did the media ever get sick of Natalie Holloway?)
I can see it now, all the media outlets will start developing special graphics and animation to kick off each report over the growing controversy of who will fill O'Conner's seat.
And after his was pick such a dud, Bush looks like a moron. I think this makes it harder for Bush's next nominee to be taken seriously.
2 things:
first, i think everyone is completely wrong and that miers was the radical. bush tried everything he could to signal to his base that she was the fanatical right-wing nut they were looking for. i mean, why else did rove call dobson? i don't think he was trying to fool the right, he was trying to slip someone by that he knew how she would vote that had no trail. the difference now is that we are gonna get an obvious right wing nut instead of a stealth one. i do love the withdrawal though beacuase it makes bush seem so weak.
second, i think its funny they had this happen today beacuase i think it was an obvious attempt to take some of the heat of the indictment story that they thought was gonna break today. whoops, missed it guys! sorry, thats gonna be tomoror. happy fitzmas eve evrybody!
Tim, every time I see you I like to think of it as my own Fitzmas.
Tomorrow is going to be a big day. I like how this story has had a week to simmer while the press hangs on every detail and repeats the details for the public over and over. For example, I read that Fitzgerald took time out of his busy schedule to go get a shoe shine today.
