Latest Polling Memo From Democracy Corps0 comments on this post![]() The latest polling (released yesterday) from Democracy Corps (Carville, Greenberg) shows Democrats are loosing on core voter concerns to Republicans. Their polling memo, which I suggest you read if you are a political junkie, shows polling data taken just before the Schiavo case really began to dominate national headlines. There is also some interesting polling that shows in a hypothetical race Bill Clinton beats George W. Bush 51% - 46% and Hillary Clinton beats Jeb Bush 50% - 47%... again these are pre-Schiavo numbers. The end of the memo gives arguments why Democrats are poised to move up. I hope so! Republicans ask "What Would Jesus Do" and Democrats ask "What Would James Carville Do." Carville ran the Clinton campaigns and having read most of his books I like the man and his message. There is a strategy in place by Democracy Corps in releasing these polling memos. Carville and company know that polls drive media coverage and the message used by Democrats in Washington. If they get ahead of the story they can help shape the coverage. Schiavo, Tom Delay, the social security debacle, and steroids are taking the wind out of the Republican's sails. Now Democrats need to capitalize... as usual. Still, things are looking up. Go Democracy Corps Go! Wednesday, March 30, 20051 Year and Counting9 comments on this post
March 31, 2004 was the premier of Air America Radio. Every single conservative mocked the notion of liberal talk radio, and guaranteed the networks failure. In a very uncommon event, the conservatives were wrong and Air America has enjoyed the greatest debut of a new radio station in the history of radio. The rightwingers like to cling to the early financial struggles of the network, but the network survived and is thriving. The turbulent and tremendously successful first year is featured on an HBO documentary this week.
![]() ![]() Personally, I listen to the Phoenix affiliate about an hour a day, usually in the car. There is this local guy in the morning, who is okay at best. Then there is Al Franken, who is pretty good, especially since he gets the best guests. Then there is Ed Schultz, who is actually not an official Air America guy, but he is on most of the affiliates in the country. Schultz does his show from Fargo, and is really appealing to average folks. After Schultz is Randi Rhodes, who has the best show in my opinion. Also, starting Friday, Jerry Springer's show will a part of Air America. Obviously, Springer is great. A critical look at Enormous Omlete and self3 comments on this post![]() As many of you well know, our friends at Burger King have recently released a controversaly delicious new breakfast item: 'The Enormous Omelet Sandwich.' It has received a lot of bad press due to its 730 calories and 47 scrumptious grams of fat. I would like to try, as an exercise in the art of debate, to speak in its defense. Here goes: Penny Kris-Etherton, a professor of nutrition at Penn State, has spoken-out against the sandwich saying, "Americans do not need an Enormous Omelet Sandwich," Hey Penny, every party has a pooper, that's why we invited you. The Department of Agriculture and the Department of Health and Human Services, seem to think that the average American female requires 1,800 to 2,400 calories each day, and men: 2,200 to 3,000. Hey Department of Agriculture/Health, no one likes a know-it-all. Don't knock it until you try it, four-eyes. Besides this sandwich isn't nearly as bad as Hardee's new "Monster Thickburger" (1400 calories and 107 grams of fat). The Enormous Omlete is twice as healthy, and might serve as a good first step in a twelve step program for those Monster ThickBurger addicts on the road to recovery. Health problems, you say? Talk to the hand, worry-wart. (Whew. This is harder than I thought.) ------------------------------------------------------------- So, in other news, I have hung up my Rubix Cube shoes. About a month ago I became obsessed with solving a Rubix Cube that I found laying around at work. I fiddled around until too many of the stickers had fallen off to continue. I went out bought another one and turned it until it broke. Bought another. Broke it. Fixed it. But now I've handled it so much that the yellow and white stickers are too faded and greasy to tell apart. And the orange ones are well on their way. In the beginning I just fiddled with it at work, on the toilet, and on the toilet at work. Soon, though, I was carrying it on the bus back and forth to work...so focused on my mission that I missed my stop more than once. Eventually I was playing with it during breakfast and after work in the lounge of the hostel. With a little help from the internet I studied the 7 stages of the cube. Memorized the rougher ones and finally solved the thing on my own. I've gotten to the point where I only need to glance down at it occasionally. In the beginning it took me 10 minutes then 5 then 4 and now 3 and some change, but today I declare: I am hanging up my Rubix Cube shoes before it's too late. 'Why?' you ask. Get this: At some point my focus moved from the cube to the people on the bus. The kids at the hostel. My co-workers wide eyes'. "Hey guys look at me! Look what I can do!" I was shouting at the top of my insecure, metaphorical lungs. I suddenly found myself carrying it everywhere, and instead of missing my bus stop cause I was so focused on the cube, I was missing my bus stop cause I couldn't get off until I'd finished showing a group of perfect strangers how smart I was. How lame! How truly, truly pathetic! A book called "The Devil's Dictionary" by Ambrose Bierce defines 'Achievement' as: "The death of endeavor and the beginning of disgust." Truer words have never been spoken. I was reading an essay by George Orwell the other day. In it he says, "by the time you have perfected any style of writing, you have always outgrown it." I think that goes too for rubix cubes and just about everything else under the sun. Thorough or Annoying?0 comments on this post
It seems I have spent the last 2 weeks talking about guns or Schiavo. I am going to try to wrap up Schiavo in this post and get the guns thing out of my system later in the week.
The media has been disgusting in this coverage of Schiavo. There now appears to be a sick countdown to death going on. Every time I read the news its: "11 days without feeding tubes." They might as well bring in Dick Clark and drop a ball (bad joke, but seriously, that is what they are acting like). Now that the legal recourse is over, I think the media has the responsibility to backoff. They backed off reporting on the stolen 2000 election after Gore conceded, so why not here. Okay, so here are some other freaking amazing twists. Kyle mentioned yesterday in the comments, that Tom Delay is the biggest hypocrite on Earth. Delay has been hootin' and hollarin' (he is from Texas) about how this is murder. I guess Delay murdered his own Dad, because Delay made a decision similar to Michael Schiavo by denying his Dad dialysis 17 years ago. Remember, Delay also said "God delivered Terry to him, so he could rally the Republican base." He is a sick man. Anyone that supports him makes me sick. ![]() ![]() ![]() But my favorite story is about Scott Heldreth. There was a widely, nationally published story about Scott and his son Joshua Heldreth, 10, on Sunday. Scott and Joshua have been leading protests. Scott is a leading voice against abortion, and now Schiavo. Joshua was even arrested for how crossing a police line during the protests. He said Dad had inspired him. Dad said "God's with me." The AP story made the 2 out to be some sort of heart-warming-tale of father and son. PROBLEM: Dad's a registered sex offender. The problem was easily discoverable, yet was completely omitted. Well, at least Dad was just encouraging his 10-year old son to get arrested at the protest.....now we know he could have treated his son like a guest at Neverland. Tuesday, March 29, 2005National Sleep Awareness Week2 comments on this post![]() ![]() March 28 - April 3 is National Sleep Awareness Week and I thought you might have missed it. There is an official website that is full of information that will help you sleep. The site says that Americans are not getting enough sleep because we are over worked, under sexed, consume too much caffine, and watch too much television. Today is also National Insomnia Day. Horray! Please help those in need this week. Monday, March 28, 2005

GameCube's Big Chance: Sony is stopping US sales of Playstation 2 because of a copyright problem. I have owned Playstation for as long as I can I remember. I know some people with XBox, and even one person with a GameCube. I could not imagine having to live like that. XBox is just stupid and GameCube seems only appropriate for 12-year olders and below. Hopefully this situation is resolved before I ever have a problem with my Playstation.
Fundamentalists Not "Fun" But "Mental" on Schiavo5 comments on this post![]() ![]() Notice the woman's sign that reads "Barbara Bush, are you proud of your sons now?" One lesson that Republicans need to learn is their wackadoo social conservative base will never be happy because the more you give them the more they want. If you make them feel like they are the reason that you win elections, then they will scare those moderates who actually win elections for you away. Republicans love to portray their party as one united behind President Bush who won a mandate from the American people. Well, that 51% mandate is starting to show cracks as the President has stumbled lately on Social Security privatization and now the Schiavo case. The signs of Republicans being unhappy with this Schiavo case are every where. A recent Time Poll had 70% of respondents saying the President's actions in the Schiavo case were"not right." The White House must be getting a similar feeling because this week GW cut short a vacation to fly back to sign emergency legislation, but then did not mention it in his weekly radio address. Hell, even Bob Barr came out against it. What is happening to Terry Schiavo is truly a sad thing. It is one of the toughest decisions that families have to make, but is it her husband's decision. Just like abortion is one of the hardest decisions that some women have to make, but it is their right. People do have the right to "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness." The right to "life" doesn't mean that government steps in and forces you to live. "Liberty" should make these decisions free from government involvement and sometimes the "pursuit of happiness" can come through death because the body can no longer handle life. I also find it interesting that the people who are most religious are the most opposed to death. If Terry Schiavo can go to heaven where she can walk, talk, eat and whatever instead of blink and nod in a hospital bed, then why are these people so opposed to the idea? Drug addict Rush Limbaugh has made a few stupid comments regarding environmental issues. Thought I'd share, as a reminder that this loser is one of the leading Republican voices.
1) While discussing ANWR drilling, Limbaugh said "the wildlife that lives there wishes it didn't, but it's too stupid to figure out how to move anywhere." 2) While discussing Terry Schiavo, Limbaugh claimed liberals are a bunch of hypocrites. Reason: Beached whales and dolphins want to die, but environmentalists force them to stay alive. Evidently Rush communicates with caribou, and has seen the living wills of whales and dolphins. Unless he is just having delusions from all the drugs. Sunday, March 27, 2005

Billy Packer: You Suck. Seriously, what is his problem calling the games. He was so biased for Duke on Friday. Today, he sounded like he was going to cry when Kentucky lost. Jim Nantz was sort of getting me mad, too. Well, either way, screw Jay Bilas and all the "experts" that bashed the Big Ten all year.

An evangelical "Christian" church in Charlotte has stopped donating to a food bank. Also, the church has withdrawn its funding for an important program that provides services to the poor, elderly, and disabled. Why? Because the programs worked with Catholics, and 3 Muslims were allowed to help serve meals. Remember, the evangelicals are the Republican base......enjoy.

Iraq: Britian says their troops are staying. Italy's troops are leaving. Otherwise, not much to update, aside from the continued US death per day, which I guess is better then it has been. Overall, less news is probably good news.
Borderline Logic: Living in Arizona, there is a lot of talk about the Mexican border and immigration. There is even some group of losers that claim they are going to guard the border themselves. Everyone seems to blame the Mexicans and there is a lot of hostile talk about these workers. Everyone seems to ignore the reason they come here: they can get a job. If all these businesses didn't hire them, they wouldn't come. So instead of such anger at the illegals, how about cracking down on the business owners? Oh yeah, they are usually rich white guys.....we can't mess with them. Days are Numbered: On February 27, Sen. Rick Santorum (R-PA) claimed he would not accept Bush's proposed cuts in Amtrak, but he lied and supported the cuts. Also, Santorum has been stealing money from the local Pennsyvania schools. He will be unemployed at the end of next year. He better save up the money he is stealing. ![]() ![]() Appointments: Wolfowitz gets appointed to run the World Bank.....what a joke. Karen Hughes as a diplomat.....I think I have one of those Mary Hart reactions when I hear her talk, like Kramer in a Seinfeld episode. Rob Portman to be US trade rep.....keep up the very destructive trade deficits (side note: Portman is the Kings Island, Ohio congressman. My friend Mark wanted to run against him in 2004. He would have done as good as anyone in the heavy Republican district. Another note: anyone that thinks Kings Island is better then Cedar Point is an idiot.). Finally, there is John Bolton to the UN....it is sort of moot now to go on a big rant about how obviously ridiculous this is, but here is a good article on this ridiculous thing.....it was like flicking off the entire world.....again. Good Question: Democrats and a few decent Republicans stopped Bush's Medicaid cuts. One Republican Senator questioned the morality of his party: "It's being done by Republicans. You just have to ask yourself, how they get up in the morning and look in the mirror?" Thursday, March 24, 2005

The cable news sources have been really on my nerves with this Schiavo case. First, there is too much coverage. Second, they keep showing the same footage of her, which misleads people into thinking she might have hope. But the worst thing is how conservatives are getting away with claiming a "nobel prize nominee" thinks Schiavo has hope. Of course the guy was not actually nominated. The false claim is based on the fact that a Florida congressman, who was so pleased with this guys analysis of Schiavo, wrote a letter trying to nominate him. It kind of reminds me my one friend that declared himself eligible for the NBA Draft out of high school....if my friend claimed he was "almost drafted."

I played a lot during the dark college years and the chess board that I have carried with me to four continents is right now waiting for me in my locker at the hostel. But even with this much love for the sport, I had only a foggy idea about the career and life of Bobby Fisher. Well today the BBC ran an article titled: Then Bobby stopped playing, refused a ton of lucrative endorsement deals and went into hiding. When he refused to defend it...his title was eventually revoked. Who Was This Kid?11 comments on this post
The recent school shooting that resulted in 9 homocides and 1 suicide deserves better media coverage than it is getting. Fortunately, you have us. You should visit the official Red Lake Indian website to get some background on where this kid lived.

We'll wait for the rest of the press to do the basic research necessary to find this kind of information. Daryl was a police officer "who incidently has over 30 years of service with the Red Lake Police Department." More background on the gunman: "Weise, who routinely wore a long black trench coat, eyeliner and combat boots, has been described by several classmates as a quiet teenager... his father had committed suicide and his mother suffered head injuries in an auto accident." - WCCO Minn. Well, this Schiavo thing has had my really worked up most of the week, because I find the Republican attempt to make this political really disgusting. So I feel I owe readers a lighter tone. I received this via email and it is interesting. It is unverified.
Can you imagine working for a company of around 500 employees and has the following statistics: 29 have been accused of spousal abuse 7 have been arrested for fraud 19 have been accused of writing bad checks117 have directly or indirectly bankrupted at least 2 businesses 3 have done time for assault 71 cannot get a credit card due to bad credit 14 have been arrested on drug-related charges 8 have been arrested for shoplifting 21 are currently defendants in lawsuits 84 have been arrested for drunk driving in the last year Can you guess which organization this is? It's the 435 members of the United States Congress. The same group of idiots that crank out hundreds of new laws each year designed to keep the rest of us inline. I think this post is just a reminder to myself that most of these guys, right or left are a bunch of asses. Sometimes, I guess the only difference between me and the people I yell at is that I think they are just somewhat bigger asses. Monday, March 21, 2005Time to Bush Bash16 comments on this post
What I just learned is unbelievable. Just days ago in Texas, a child was removed from life support by the hospital, over the objection of the entire family. Texas law allows hospitals to discontinue life-sustaining care, even if a patient's family members disagree. Guess What: BUSH SIGNED THE LAW. Bush signed a law that allowed hospitals to remove people off of life support, over an entire families objection. So why did Bush leave his vacation to "save" Terry Schaivo? Remember, this is the same man who would not even comment on the tsunami tragedy for several days because he was on vacation.
![]() I felt days ago, before the memo surfaced or anything, that this whole think was a politcal game, at the expense of the entire Schiavo family. Well, here is even more proof. Bush doesn't give a shit about taking people off life support....he passed a damn law that allows a hospital to decide. And take a wild guess who the hospital wants to take off of life support: those cannot afford the treatment....THE POOR. Where were the protests when Wanda Hudson's son was removed from life support just this week, based on a BUSH LAW? Is it because Sun Hudson was black? Was there something else un-savable in this human life? I don't know, but I am guessing it is just good ole fashioned bullshit and hypocrisy from the right-wing. To me, this is a political game that is sick, twisted, and is the lowest form of garbage these sick animals can spew upon the American people. But I am just being a jerk and just have misguided hate towards Republicans, right? Tell me what I am supposed feel. Should I be loving and accepting towards these guys? Should I accept the indefensible? Seriously, tell me why I am wrong on this. Tell me how Bush is being genuine in this instance. Bush found it so urgent that he cancelled his vacation to sign the Schiavo bill, yet we know that he actually has no problem with removing people from life support. I am seriously begging.....explain the contradiction.

DEVELOPING: At least 8 dead students dead, 14 shot at a Minnesota school. The weird thing is that this not big news. Isn't this the same as Columbine? I remember CNN doing live coverage for an entire day for Columbine. It must have been a poor town in Minnesota or something....I guess only mass murder in the rich suburbs is big news.
