I have this eerie feeling that this story will be the straw that breaks the camel's back.
I know. I know...comparing Iraq to Vietnam is 'irresponsible' and 'outlandish,' but a story of a massacre of women and children is sure to bring back some memories of My Lai.
With public support so low, the doctrine of pre-emptive war and U.S. hegemony is teetering. A blow like this could be devastating. The images of slaughtered women and children may act, once again, like smelling salts under the nose of the nation.. Ultimately returning some sense of balance to the international community.
I saw an animation of this attack on NBC news last night. Supposedly a road side bomb blew up part of a convoy and then there was a house to house search that immediately followed to find the trigger man of the explosive. It was during that search that civilians were killed.
I saw a video clip of one of the girls who survived by hiding under her bed. In her statement to the media she said her father was simply on the floor praying when marines came in and shot him. That answer sounded coached to me. Aparently the perception in the Arab world is that marines gunned down an unarmed praying man. Not good PR for us.
I was driving home last night and listened to conservative radio wackadoo Michael Savage. He was angry with Bush and Rumsfeld for not publicly defendind the troops and allowind the media story to go undisputed. He said the administration should be ashamed for abandoning these soldiers and allowin these reports to go unchallenged.
I think Bush and Rummy are doing their best to distance them from this incident. Seriously, when was the last time the White house said they would be totally transparent with anything?
I happen to think that "whacko" is correct. The Commander in Chief supports his troops and assumes their innocence until proven quilty. I thought that was the American way, or does not it apply to the military?
Fred, is it possible for you to consider that those Marines were overstressed from serving a third tour of duty in an increasingly gruesome war, from having watched their buddies die in front of their eyes, from not seeing an end in sight to this madness? Is that possible? Those guys are under too much pressure, and it is possible that they snapped. The human brain can only handle so much stress. I just want to know if you can comprehend the possible consequences of sending young people to watch other human beings die over and over and over again.
IF this happened, blame should rise up the ladder to the leaders who put any troops on a third tour of duty. I don't think anyone is laying all of the guilt at the feet of the Marines. We demand better treatment for our own soldiers. For something like this to be an option for our Marines, something terribly tragic has happened to them at the hands of their leaders.
The troops are fatigued, demoralized, desperate or worse.
Folks, just remember - these guys are trying to SURVIVE...under these extreme circumstances of daily horror that we can't even imagine, trigger fingers are loose.
War generally destroys most allthe decent humans involved...except those in high towers who push the buttons and have NO conscience
Our Troops need our help to get them home as soon as possible so that these incidents will be avoided.
Terra never having been in the military much less in a situation where any minute could be my last one I am hesitant to pass judgment. Having said that I would not discount any action or reason for any actions that may occur. However my only point was that the Commander in Chief should support his soliders for 2 reasons. 1. The are under his command and he has put them in harms way. 2. An unlike Murtha I believe that a sacred premise in this country is innocent until proven quilty.
sadly you may be right that Bush does not really care. As for the rest of the "meatheads" (your descripiton not mine) i have no idea. However I do believe the press cant wait to hang these soliders and are fighting over the "honor" of finding them quilty and scream for their heads.
We'll be fighting in the streets With our children at our feet And the morals that they worship will be gone And the men who spurred us on Sit in judgement of all wrong They decide and the shotgun sings the song
I'll tip my hat to the new constitution Take a bow for the new revolution Smile and grin at the change all around Pick up my guitar and play Just like yesterday Then I'll get on my knees and pray We don't get fooled again
The change, it had to come We knew it all along We were liberated from the fold, that's all And the world looks just the same And history ain't changed 'Cause the banners, they are flown in the next war
I'll tip my hat to the new constitution Take a bow for the new revolution Smile and grin at the change all around Pick up my guitar and play Just like yesterday Then I'll get on my knees and pray We don't get fooled again No, no!
I'll move myself and my family aside If we happen to be left half alive I'll get all my papers and smile at the sky Though I know that the hypnotized never lie Do ya?
There's nothing in the streets Looks any different to me And the slogans are replaced, by-the-bye And the parting on the left Are now parting on the right And the beards have all grown longer overnight
I'll tip my hat to the new constitution Take a bow for the new revolution Smile and grin at the change all around Pick up my guitar and play Just like yesterday Then I'll get on my knees and pray We don't get fooled again Don't get fooled again No, no!

[fingers crossed]

And when they get here - lend them a hand.

I think that our GI's are currently being dissed by "meatheads in high towers who push the buttons and have NO conscience"
Fred, do you think that Bush really give a shit?

Fred: Dig this from the 60's::::
We'll be fighting in the streets
With our children at our feet
And the morals that they worship will be gone
And the men who spurred us on
Sit in judgement of all wrong
They decide and the shotgun sings the song
I'll tip my hat to the new constitution
Take a bow for the new revolution

Pick up my guitar and play
Just like yesterday

Take a bow for the new revolution
Smile and grin at the change all around
Pick up my guitar and play

Then I'll get on my knees and pray
We don't get fooled again
No, no!
I'll move myself and my family aside
If we happen to be left half alive
I'll get all my papers and smile at the sky
Though I know that the hypnotized never lie
Do ya?
There's nothing in the streets

Yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!
