Flag Burning Vote

swimsuitYesterday the Senate rejected an amendment by just one vote "to prohibit the physical desecration of the flag of the United States." A look at the roll call of votes shows some EXTREMELY interesting decisions by some Senators. Most interesting to me were Demorats Evan Bayh (D-IN), Diane Feinstein (D-CA), Mary Landrieu (D-LA), Debbie Stabenow (D-MI), and the leader of our party in the Senate Harry Reid (D-NV) who all voted "yay" to support a ban. Feinstein and Landrieu even co-sponsored the bill. Once again, I shake my head at Harry Reid, who is becoming one of my least favorite Senators.
Thankfully, Joe Lieberman (D-CT) voted against the amendment. That will help him back home in his tough primary. Interestingly, Lincoln Chafee (R-RI) and Mitch McConnell (R-KY) both voted against the amendment. That has got to cost them some points with their base knowing that a change in their votes could have made the bill law. The Senate's only independent Jim Jeffords (I-VT) also voted against the amendment.
Read the short legislation and cast your vote in the comments.

I vote "nay." While I disagree strongly with the desecration of our flag, I believe it is a freedom protected by the first amendment of the Constitution of the United States of America.

I vote no for the same reason.

This is just a distraction anyway, since the amendment would only "authoriz[e] Congress to prohibit the physical desecration of the flag of the United States."

I also agree and wrote this on my site. First time in a long time there has been all this agreement on the same issue. Of course we are all against flag burning, but we are all sensible enough to know an amendment is not needed nor would be a good idea.

Nay for me. But I actually don't strongly disagree with the desecration of the flag.

I vote no as well. Show a little respect in both areas. Did anyone see the article of Bush signing his autograph on a flag! What's up with that!!!!! mom
And then the question comes up, would he sign that little flag she's sporting around.

We can all agree that this whole idea is absurd because it is based on an indeterminate definition of "desecration"...and the many examples posted such as the fine American Woman with the Stars & Stipes thong would hamstring the "desecration" panel....I would vote that she is upholding the highest standards of flag respect.

I'd never do it, but I believe that banning flag burning would abridge free speech.

I might be in the minority on this, but I'm firmly opposed to the flag, or its likeness, as clothing. That bikini? Unacceptable. Those little flag t-shirts with the year on them (as if we need to mark the flag with a year) from Old Navy? Wrong, wrong, wrong.

Red,

I put that picture up there to make that point. I found it interesting that the bill used the word "desecration" instead of burning. That seems to be pretty broad to me and would include running the stars and stripes up the crack of your ass.
