Democrats Divided On Walmart

"Most liberal Democrats (53%) have an unfavorable opinion of Wal-Mart, according to a national survey conducted by the Pew Research Center... By contrast, 70% of conservative and moderate Democrats - and solid majorities in other political categories - have positive impressions of the world's largest company." - Pew Research Center

Walmart Poll

Since it seems Ohio has a Walmart in every town and a town springing up around every Walmart, I thought this poll was important. Is targeting just Walmart a good strategy for Democrats or is it better to frame the debate around the rights of all workers? For example, being for an increase in the minimum wage rather than against Walmat. Democrats need to get away from being a party of protest and move towards being the party of policy. I think this issue is a good example.

Targeting Walmart is a bad strategy. Pointing and yelling at the type of crap that Walmart does is a good thing, though. Just no need to single them out - remember, if Target could be Walmart, I bet they would do it

(that said, the Walton family is a specific kind of greedy that makes me sick - Sam Walton, I don't think, would have accepted the way his kids do business)

Walmart is the largest private employer in the country, so they are an example of the minimum wage issue. I think they're targeted because Dems believe in raising the minimum wage, and they see Walmart not paying their people enough, not providing health insurance to all, and locking employees in the building at night so they could clean the store. They've made themselves an example - they could be a good one by paying their people enough that employees could spend more money and thus raise the overall wealth of communities, or they could continue to pay low wages and not provide adequate health care.

Didn't Hillary Clinton serve on the Board of Walmart?

They aren't targeted just because they're Walmart - a lot of their practices go against liberal Democratic values.

Intersting - Walmart failed in Germany because they hired non-German managers who required the staff to work in English, and just didn't have an understanding of German culture. It was interesting to see Walmart fail, but it wasn't because of wages.

That being said, I don't shop at Walmart because they have the rudest employees I have ever encountered.

I can't stand shopping at Wal-Mart. I think they have the loudest and most annoying intercoms ever.

I can and would be more than happy to give a lengthy discussion on why Conservatives don’t really “like” Wal*Mart – why they simply have to tolerate them instead. I can also offer some points on the pluses and minuses of what they have done to change the world-wide economy and the rules under which large corporations much operate. Obviously, their employee “benefits” or lack there of are pretty dismal.

Chuck – Sam Walton was a true visionary in what he built and accomplished, and in how he changed the business landscape, but you are dead on that his heirs have taken it too far.
More to come on this later…

Terra - Wal-Mart has initially failed in a number of countries and areas because of their initial inability to adapt to different market conditions and buying/shopping habits (also management styles). A great example of this is Mexico where Wal-Mart failed repeatedly early on – now they are essentially or own large portions of the lion’s share of the Mexican market. This is also becoming the case in South America where they are running the number 2 world grocer into the ground.

"As of August 2006, the total number of Wal-Mart associates in Ohio is 49,724"

-Walmart Facts.com

This website has state by state profiles about Walmart. There are also 87 Supercenters and 44 Discount Stores in our state. There are only 88 counties in Ohio. That is a lot of Walmart.

the waltons are among the nation's most generous philanthropists, you just don't like that they choose not to pour their charitable givings into leftist causes. your disdain for them says more about you than it does them...
