First day of school
This week begins the first day of school for many students, and it's already turning out to be an interesting year.In Indiana, 126 students were sent home and suspended for not wearing the appropriate clothes. Banned clothes include baggy pants, low-cut shirts, t-shirts, and shirts with logos on them. Many schools have resorted to a uniform to cut down on violations. What's your opinion of school uniforms? Do they help classroom management or hurt student's ability to express themselves?
In Colorado, a 7th grade geography teacher was placed on leave for hanging flags in his classroom. Colorado has a law that no flag other than the US or Colorado flag may be displayed. Foreign flags may be shown temporarily if they are for learning purposes. (Like a geography class?) I know we're a proud nation, but this is a little extreme. And what kind of example does this set for kids... that schools don't encourage thinking about other countries.

I'm all for dress codes and or uniforms. The state should set it up as a trade off with students. If your school meets the following uniform criteria, then we will make sure that your sports, art, and foreign language programs receive funding so you can express yourself there.
Research shows uniforms work and it's not asking much of the student.
As someone with a permenant foreign flag in my classroom, this state of Colorado law is ridiculous. When teaching about world history and other cultures, it seems best to model a worldly behavior--one that accepts others. By restricting other flags, we illustrate to the students an American superiority that creates roadblocks, not bridges. Of course, if nationalism is your nector, the Colorado flag should go too.

I definitely recognize the benefits of uniforms, but cannot stand the thought of having to wear one to school myself, so I don’t think I can actually support the idea. I spend too much of my time trying to walk the fine line of what is acceptable to wear to work as it is, so I can’t ask kids to be forced into a corner on this. While some things may be inappropriate, kids need to be able to express some individuality. The burden really needs to fall on parents to actually read and adhere to the standing rules their respective school district has outlined regarding dress codes (these are usually found on the inside cover of handy school folders given to student son the first day of class). Also, I would really think that for the most part readers of this site would be opposed to uniforms since frequently schools require them to be bought from a limited number of retailers –which would offer the chance for big businesses to take advantage of government contracts.
While I would have hated to wear a uniform to school, I think I'm in support of them. For example, it would help to put an end to attitudes held by some that one's worth is based on their wealth--often represented by the clothes they wear. I went to Revere and their were many people who seemed to have this attitude then, and I doubt it has changed so much in the last ten years.
That's a good point, Darwal. However, schools can make their uniform as easy as polo shirts with khakis. Why not? It's well defined - you can't get lowriding jeans or trashy t-shirts from that description.
One Akron private school requires school-logo polos, and the kids are able to express themselves through the colors they choose. "Mods" can wear black, and the happy-go-lucky kids can wear yellow. Or whatever. Kids figure out how to be unique, and still be dressed appropriately if you give them guidelines.
We can't rely on parents to know what their kids are doing. That would be ideal, but it isn't realistic.

I learned in philosphy 101 about how a slippery slope is not a logically sound argument, however, in the world of political philosphy I've found that slippery slopes are indeed trecherous, and I'm not sure that the people of the USA can afford to cede control of our children to the good intentions of the government.
The best reason for uniforms is so that when students from rival schools meet in a field for a huge rumble, it's easier to tell who is who. I can't tell you how many times a perfectly good rumble is ruined to the point of being unwatchable because I can't tell who to root for.

People say uniforms help give a sense of discipligne and security. Some people say having uniforms makes the kids not have to compete to keep up with the newest type of fashion. Many say it helps reduce the school shoot outs, and makes the school more of a modest enviroment to be in. First of all Before any shcool adopts of the idea of wearing uniforms. They need to acknowledge the responsibilities that come with wearing uniforms. They need to compare the pros to the cons, and discuss if it actually will benenfit there shcool or not. The teachers need to be willing to do the things needed if they do decide to make the kids wear uniforms. I think that if the kids have to wear uniforms then the teachers should ALWAYS HAVE TO WEAR uniforms too. People say that if the kids are wearing uniforms then they would be easier to recognize if they got lost on a trip or if they ran away from school because they commited a crime. Another thing I wanted to mention is if a person decided to bring a gun to school and shoot people (Not saying I encourage it.) Do you think that the person with the gun is going to where a school uniform anyway.
