Rental rates have soared 40% - and the average selling price of homes in areas not affected by flooding rose about 25 percent. Someone must be making money off these increases and I am guessing it is not those in need.

Many New Orleanians are suffering from depression - here is a profile on the mounting mental health crisis in New Orleans.

There are 5.4 million more people living in poverty since Bush took office. Katrina highlighted the poverty in the country. But have the tragic images caused Republicans to raise the minimum wage or do anything to lessen poverty? No, and in fact their greedy policies clearly increase poverty. But they don't care, so it doesn't really matter to those scumbags.

Investigation shows, 70% percent of government contracts awarded after Katrina were "no bid" contracts, wasting hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars. I wonder how many of those no-bid contracts went to Bush donors? My non-investigative estimate is somewhere between 94-100%.

I haven't watched Spike Lee's HBO documentary on Katrina yet, but I have heard great things. It's four hours long, so set aside a whole night (then plan on being pissed off for at least 24 hours).

This recent staged Katrina event with Bush makes me so mad.

When your local news, or President Bush, or even Oprah show inspirational stories of Katrina recovery, remember this: just 16% of Katrina victims say life is back to normal.

I have been turned onto a site called Humidcity.com. It is a New Orleans blogger giving the low down on the recovery. He spares no punches for the savage Republicans that caused this - including former Republican Mayor Ray Nagin, who he claims a major failure. The most insane thing I learned from the site is that dead bodies are still being discovered.

1/3 of the trash has still not been picked up. What? Did I just type that correctly? A year later, we haven't even picked up the damn trash. I am going to go cry now.

BONUS:
Republican Senator Trent Lott has been yelling about insurance companies not paying for damage from Katrina. Its all just yelling - no action. These companies should be FORCED to pay for more then they are. Its a disgrace.

But no Republican, even one affected by the storm, will ever take on the holy insurance companies.

Thanks for the props, but I'm just calling it as I see it. When you are surrounded by the wreckage of 80% of your city its easy.

If you want a good look at what it is like here now visit my site and go through the NOLABlog links in the sidebar. I particularly reccomend Da Po Blog, Maitri's Vatul-Blog, Your Right Hand Thief (best political writer of all of us here!) and Dangerblond. Hell read 'em all!

We have been abandoned by those whose paychecks our taxes pay! Local, State, and most particularly Federal employees have been negligent and corrupt to an unfathomable degree.

Remember New Orleans.
I, for one, will neither forgive nor forget.

Thanks Loki and please keep the Can Do Spirit (if thats possible)

I personally felt quite sick about the death and the non-help of our govt agencies just after the disaster.

My 81 yr old friend in Metairie was lost for 3 weeks before he turned up alive. He told me of unselfish and worthy acts of personal charity by neighbors and other citizens - I say God bless them...BUT Damn our leaders and govt non/reactors.

I visited NO in 2003 and feel a quasi/personal loss too.

The BIG lesson is that we need to turn around the Nation and oust the Party of Greed & Hypocrisy in power.

Chuck: hang in there Buddy - this stuff boils my blood also.

i know of one contract that for sure went to bush's friends: the one for body recovery. while working at the shelters in dallas i met a man who does body recovery all over the world. he had spent the 8 months prior to Katrina in the tsunami affected region and prior to that he worked in rwanda. his group was commissioned to go to NO and then sent home b/c a group from waco (owned by a friend of the bush family)was awarded the body recovery contract. after ten days in NO there were only 15 of the original 50. the other 35 packed up and went home b/c they were not mentally prepared to see what they saw.

and btw, the spike lee documentary is INCREDIBLE!

Do a little more research-Mayor Ray Nagin and Gov.Blanco are both democrats and Nagin denies ever being a republican-They also could have prevented a lot of the suffering if they had taken the appropriate actions instead of delaying until it was to late.

Objective independent.
