Make abortion unnecessary, not illegal

This is the last week of sessions for the do-nothing Congress, and I have a suggestion for one thing they could do:
Consider Congressman Tim Ryan's Abortion Reduction Legislation. Ryan, a pro-life Democrat, has joined with Rosa DeLauro, a pro-choice Democrat, to write a bill that would provide unwanted-pregancy reduction programs, and also provide resources, education, and support for women who might otherwise have an abortion.
House Resolution 6067 focuses on prevention through sex education, afterschool programs, teen pregnancy prevention incentive grants, restore and expand family planning and Medicaid health care programs to low income mothers who would otherwise not be able to afford the hospital bills associated with giving birth, and others.
The bill would also provide support for programs that encourage alternatives to abortion, and to help women who feel hopeless at the prospect of having a child she cannot support. It would expand Medicaid and S-CHIP, help pregant students and new moms to allow them to stay in school, expand adoption assistance for families, support group homes, and support new parents through child-related education programs.
This is a well-rounded resolution aimed at not only preventing unwanted pregnancies, but also supporting parents after they have the child. Anyone who calls him/herself pro-life should be in support of reducing the number of teen and unwanted pregnancies. And pro-choice supporters generally want women to have the right to make her own decisions, but also to be supported in her choice. Ryan's proposed legislation provides both. Here's a good summary of HR 6067.
Slightly related: Check out this video of Tim Ryan's speech on why young people believe the Bush Administration wants to institute the draft, even though they say they won't.
Unrelated: More proof that Senator George Allen is a racist. "Allen said he came to Virginia because he wanted to play football in a place where 'blacks knew their place'," says an old teammate of Allen's at the University of Virginia. Check out the article. Three sources confirmed Allen's racist attitudes.

Tim Ryan is no joke
more proof that Allen is racist..
Doug Jones, who said he roomed with Shelton at Virginia, said in a statement that he never saw or heard anything from Allen that supports Shelton's claims.
"I never heard George Allen use any racially disparaging word nor did I ever witness or hear about him acting in a racially insensitive manner," Jones said.
I am down with the Ryan proposal. If republicans were not frauds, they would be too.
and in regards to Allen. maybe you were just being nice by not directly saying it, but those source confirmed his use of the "n-word"
Chuck - that's about as worthwhile as the two people who were with em at the Browns Backer dinner confirming they also heard Jim Brown say he was my dad. Clearly Allen is racist, as he already proved to everyone, but personally I don't need a bunch of people from 30 years ago saying they heard him say this or that. Nothing more should really need to be said or shown than his recent actions. If that isn;t enough for people then they are idiots.
This stuff comes "a week after a debate in which Allen bristled at questions about his Jewish ancestry. Allen later acknowledged publicly for the first time that his grandfather, a prisoner in a Nazi concentration camp, was Jewish, and on Monday he said both his maternal grandparents were Jews."
He acknowledged for the first time that his grandfather who was in a concentration camp was Jewish?! Doesn't that seem like he was ashamed to have a Jewish grandfather? He should be proud that his family withstood that racism, and he should have learned from it.
Certainly Allen's current actions are more important, but the cumulation of these statements shows the inherent racism he's carried all his life.
Allen's an idiot. I love this Webb-Allen race!
If Virginia doe not elect Jim Webb as Senator - the state will be missing out on a highly qualified leader (Sec of Navy, Annapolis Grad, Semper Fidelis/Marine).
There is really no choice since Allen is a hack-bigot politician.
In light of this Iraq Mess that we are currently in, Webb is the clear choice.

darwal, perfect world: i agree.
we live in the new era of FOXNews, so, sadly, Dems need to pound these points
Tim Ryan - You da man!
Chuck- just glad you see where I was coming from. I do understand the perpetual process of "dumbening" we now must go through for everything. FOX news clearly not right, but CNN is quickly climbing the charts in my list of ridiculous crap websites after their headlien alst wek about Joey Porter's dogs killing a horse. I thought to myself, now how the hell is that possible and I had to read about it - obviously it was only a miniature horse that was probably about the same size as his mastiff. They might as well have put Barbaro's name in the headlien to since it was a horse - then they could have increased their site hits. I hate about every news source now...
Dar, i GET more "News" from Carlos Mencia, Jon Stewart, and Steve Colbert than ABC, CBS, CNN, FAUX, NBC....or the whole Murdoch Empire.......And, I forgot, The Chiefsource is a great source of meaningful mind stimulation.
Clinton was right on truthful with his "Bull" and "misinformation" comments about Faux and its whores and keepers.
OK, I admit, Mencia may be a questionable source too but still way better than Faux
jim webb recently said something to the effect that "everyone who grew up in the south has used the N-word at one time or another..."
so we have a denial from allen and a tacit admission from webb concerning each's use of that word (a word, by the way, that society has become desensitized to due to its vast use in black popular culture) and allen's the bad guy?
grow up. it's a word (ugly, no question - one i don't use) that jim webb acknowledges he has used and allen MAY OR MAY NOT have used TWENTY FIVE YEARS ago.
Whatever Allen says or does ====> Webb is the better choice by far, When the Nation has a military mess such as NOW, what better qualification than complete understanding and thorough military experience such as Webb has?
