Edwards Makes It Official
On Wednesday, John Edwards announced he is running for President. There will be a former rally, in New Orleans, on Thursday to kick off his campaign. His campaign slogan will be "Tomorrow Begins Today." Beginning the campaign in New Orleans is a symbol of Edwards nobel priorities. I, along with Editor-in-Chief, Kyle, love John Edwards. There is no doubt he should have been in the nominee in 2004. He would have beaten Bush. He was that uniting figure that America needed. His "Two America" theme captivated sensible people (hardcore Republicans mocked him, but I said sensible people). So it is nice to hear he is running again. As of today, he is certainly my guy (at least until we hear from Obama).
That said, what is with the timing? Gerald Ford just died, so this announcement is getting no airtime. The timing had been planned for a while, but you must adjust. Either way, I am breaking out my Edwards for President shirt, and hoping he goes all the way (again, until we get an announcement from Obama).
Unrelated: I wish I could have seen everyone a bit more over my holiday back in Ohio, but it didn't work out. I had a family emergency. Without revealing too much family information on a political blog, I must comment on something personal. I had a family member get very sick over Christmas. While it seems she will be okay, she was put in a bad position because her stupid Medicare Drug Plan suddenly quit covering an essential pill. So when you wonder where the anger comes from sometimes, it comes from that type of crap. No American should deprived of life-saving medicine, just because a-hole Republicans feel it is more important to have tax breaks for the mega rich.

Two more thoughts:
1) I remember getting watery eyes listening to Edwards speak. Kyle and I also met him. He/it was great. If Obama does run, I am not sure what I would do. If I go with Obama (likely), it is because I think he is more electable. Not an insult to Edwards, but Obama is the new Edwards. And Obama is black, which is an added amount of coolness.
2) Some say Edwards does not have experience on foreign policy issues. I ask, have you seen George Bush's resume and performance????
I would agree with the fact that it is politically stupid not to wait - I know he wants to get airtime in what was supposed to be a dead news week, but come on Edwards Team...really, though it wasnt some huge announcement everyone knew it was coming. I might like Edwards a little more but I hate his main spokeswoman that Jennifer Palmieri - I have to turn off the TV when she is on. Supporting Edwards (primary only, not the general) if he does me a favor and ditches her.

Obama is the Rock Star
I like Obama more than Edwards. Edwards is a good motivator, and he's doing wonderful things on his own. But, Obama has been working in government for over 12 years and I think he can reach independents and independent Republicans better. Edwards might split the Obama vote because they both recognize the 2 Americas.
Obama's book is much better than Edwards' lame-o "Home: Blueprints of our Lives" which is, I think, I picture book of people's houses. Obama's book is about how to bring America back to what it once was, and how to move forward, united.
Obama excites people more than Edwards. But there are too many racists and Christian Fundamentalists to let him take the spotlight. They'll blame his lack of experience, but we'll all know the real reason. There are actually members of the black community expressing fear that if Obama is elected, he'll be shot. It's ridiculous that a vote for a president would be based on who the voter thinks would last the longest without being shot.

P.S. I listened to John "class action" Edwards on one of the cable news shows two nights ago and if his wife would run instead I might consider suporting her. She is very impressive.

Wes Clark could bring some sorely needed advice on all our military messes that Bush has created. Edwards definately has two good traits : Brains and Charisma and he will rate very high in the social agendas. Clark has Brains and much , much experience in Military matters.
Obama, sorry to say, will be hindered, by the underlying racist factor. Too bad because if your mother is a white woman from Kansas - Why not say you are White?

but it is very interesting - VERY interesting - that your response to the episode is a political attack against a government policy to make some kind of medicare reform.
that said, it is very true - VERY true - that you have an opportunity to do some good here. i would hope you would take advantage of the opportunity and work with your family to find a way to provide this medicine. it's a better and more effective response to the issue than posting a political message on the internet.
and nobody ever said it was "good" that your family member had to spend any time in the hospital.

Now is the time for Obama because after 2008, he'll challenge an incumbent. And in 2016 he'll have too much of a record. Edwards doesn't have the experience that Obama does... by far. It will be an interesting contest. In Obama's senate race, none of the Dems in the primary ran negative ads on each other. And in the general, Obama kept it positive. He was up against Alan Keyes, so he didn't really need to say much.
Who will go negative first in this race?
My question is who will the Democratic Party establishment back. As Chuck noted, he and I were strong Edwards supporters and I liked Edwards much more than Kerry. The problem was the party chose Kerry. I don't think Obama or Edwards will be the establishment pick. This worries me.
Obama/Edwards would be a strong ticket. Good to see the Democrats have such viable candidates out there.

Then the person has to go to the hospital for a week - may not have happened if she just got the pill.
This is why comprehensive national health care is essential. It is cheaper then our current system. There is a reason we spend more for less then every other country.
