Interview With Betty Sutton
This past Saturday I was invited to attend a "Meet The Bloggers" session with Betty Sutton at Cafe Momus in Akron. Betty Sutton is a candidate running for Sherrod Brown's open seat in Ohio's 13th Congressional District. She is one of at least 6 Democrats who will be trying to win the primary in my congressional district. As you can see from the picture I took, the session is recorded. Participants included bloggers Redhorse, Scott Bakalar, McKee Stewart, Scott Piepho from the 13th District. George Nemeth and Tim Ferris came down from Cleveland. I hadn't met any of these guys before, but they gave me a seat at the table which was pretty cool. Each of us had a microphone and were able to ask questions of the candidate. George Nemeth posted the audio of the session at the Meet The Bloggers website. The premise is giving poltical bloggers from the Akron and Cleveland area access to local candidates. It was pretty sweet. I felt so legit. My impression of Betty Sutton: I liked her. I had not met or seen Betty Sutton prior to this meeting. I knew that Emily's List had endorsed her and that was about it. She was articulate and well versed on the issues that matter to Democrats. When asked what issues she believed were important she listed in order: 1. Jobs and Trade 2. Education 3. Healthcare
These are the issues that I want to hear a Democrat primary candidate talk about. I have posted the transcript of the questions I asked Betty Sutton and her answers in the comments section. You can also listen to the audio for yourself. It is my opinion that Betty Sutton and Tom Sawyer are the front runners for the Democratic Primary.
The Art of Vilifying
It's awfully peculiar if you stop to think about it.
A bin Laden video surfaces and the 24-hour news coverage comes swarming. But no matter how nonstop the coverage, all we seem to hear is the briefest of overviews repeated on a loop and a ton of semi-related analysis like: How do you think this'll affect the president's approval rating?
Am I the only one who has shook his fist at Anderson Cooper and shouted: Just show the damn video already!
Now, if you've recently had a lobotomy you may be saying: "Bob, they don't televise them because they may include secret cues to activate al-Qaeda sleeper cells the world over. It is a matter of national security!"
Let me ask this: If you were an evil genius would you transmit your coded messages though a medium that you knew the CIA and NSA and FBI would be scrutinizing more than any other or by way of the absolutely unpolicable expanse of the Internet?
Besides, although it is a pain in the ass, anyone can get the full transcript from foreign sources in about 5 minutes anyways...even al-Qaeda sleeper cells in Boise, Idaho can read the BBC online.
So let's put this nonsense justification aside for a moment and ask the real question:
Why would the Bush administrating push U.S.-based media against airing the bin Ladin recordings?
Hold that thought…
At my job I recently did some work on the rerelease of GI JOE! That's right, after being AWOLish for a decade or so, Duke and Snake Eyes are back and reporting for duty! Hasbro is releasing a new toy line and a new cartoon will soon be airing called GI JOE: SIGMAS 6.
I've seen the first episode and man, if there isn't something familiar about the story line...
Destro, the evil Cobra mastermind is back at it, he has pulled together a nebulous network of brainwashed ninjas and loyal robots to crush freedom.
As I worked, I started to wonder: what was Destro so darn mad about? Unfortunately the new show gives no coherent justification. Destro represents no nation state or oppressed peoples or rational ideology and almost all of his back story from the comic books has been scraped.
The new Destro is simply evil in a vacuum.
Anyhow, the project got me thinking about the Osama tapes again. I searched for the transcripts (that CNN.com failed to include in their special report page dedicated exclusively to the Osama videos! See their sidebar.) and I read them in their entirety for a change. Without the help of Anderson Cooper.
In this last one, Osama empathizes with the U.S. soldiers, points out misinformation put out by the pentagon, describes torture techniques being used by the U.S. (including electric drills in joints), gives a book recommendation, discusses the futility of continued violence and even, at times, sounds poetic. Listen:
"As for us, we do not have anything to lose. The swimmer in the sea does not fear rain. You have occupied our land, defiled our honour, violated our dignity, shed our blood, ransacked our money, demolished our houses, rendered us homeless, and tampered with our security. We will treat you in the same way...You tried to deny us the decent life, but you cannot deny us a decent death."
He ends with, "I swear not to die but a free man even if I taste the bitterness of death."
Hey, I thought this guy hated freedom?!
Before I go further...please, do not misunderstand this post. It is not a defense of Osama. I certainly am not trying to justify his actions. Furthermore, I am not concerned here with the validity or sincerity of what he's said, only why the administration would want to keep us from hearing it.
If I learned anything from the original GI JOE it was this: Knowing is half the battle.
Sadly in the rerelase of this cartoon (in our post-Sept-11th-world), this out-of-date tag line has been retired. It turns out that 'knowing' isn't all it was cracked up to be. From now on, Destro and Osama will remain evil in a vacuum. And our subsequent strategy in the War on Terror will continue to mimic that of a roach exterminator calling for ever stronger poisons.
Understanding The Orange Community
It is the middle of winter in Akron and the orange people are everywhere. I know people look better tan, but there is a point where you go so much that you turn orange. The only business across the street from my apartment complex is a Hollywood Tans and the parking lot is always full. I don't know much about tanning salons, so I checked out the Hollywood Tans' website. Two things struck me: First, they offer "unlimited tanning" for $19.95 per month. Unlimited? How much do people go? I think this pricing plan helps explain the increase in the orange population. Second, the beds range in time from 8-11 minutes. How powerful are these lights? How hot does it get? I hope we can discuss these and related issues in the comments. Unrelated: Happy Birthday to Chelsea Clinton. She turns 26 today.
My Plan for Iraq
Just so our Conservative readers are clear, I do have a plan for this horrific war. This is a strategy, mostly based on ideas of other Democratic leaders, which I believe includes the best options for salvaging this disastrous war. There are three key elements:
1) Set a time table for withdrawal. The timetable has 3 main parts. -a) By July, drawback 50% of the troops to the borders (the strategic redeployment Murtha talks about). -b) In one year, the remaining 50% of troops are fully out of the country (leaving a presence at the border, in case of serious crisis or genocide). -c) Be totally out, zero presence anywhere in Iraq, in no more then18 months.
2) Train more Iraqi soldiers. An obvious statement, but I actually have an idea that I have never heard mentioned (except I think John Edwards sort of mentioned a similar plan in his VP debate, against Cheney, the man that shoots his friends)..... Over the next year, take every single Iraqi that wants to join he military OUT OF THE COUNTRY. Bring them to actual military bases, where the troops can get actual training. Its a joke to think that Iraqis can be trained in the middle of a war zone (errr, I mean Civil War zone). So take them to foreign countries where they can get the training they need. Nations like France have offered use of their facilities. Hell, take them to Fort Hood in Texas. This is doable. However, inexplicably, we aren't doing it.....and Iraqis aren't getting trained. I think it takes the US about four months to train a ground soldier. Well, if we gave those Iraqis a similar training environment, it stands to reason they would be ready to take over many responsibilities in one year.
3) Most Important: Absolutely RENOUNCE any plans of our use or attachment to any military bases in Iraq. There is fierce nationalism in Iraq, which is fueling this new surge toward Civil War. By promising we are actually leaving is the best way to temper that wild nationalism. Then we have to keep the promise, too.
So this is my plan. I don't know if it would stop the incoming Civil War. However, sadly, I do know that Bush will not be following any of my plans.
Civil War In Iraq Feared
Even I, an often negative person, was shocked to read that above headline about Iraq spinning truly out of control. Over the last few week I began thinking that the real threats of violence were coming from Dick Cheney's gun blasts and that we were at war with the United Arab Emirates. Well, I guess not. A mosque attack that killed over 100 Iraqis has really caused chaos. Even the guy that is supposedly the President of Iraq, Jalal Talabani, says Civil War is just steps away. Talabani has instituted a curfew and called an emergency summit to discuss the violence. However, Sunni leaders told Talabani to screw himself......not so good. President Bush responded, "the world must stand united against them (terrorists), and steadfast behind the people of Iraq." Are there any Republicans that are sick of his stale rhetoric, in the face of mounting problems? Somewhat Related: In 1999 the US, had Osama Bin Laden. They knew where he was, and could have taken him out. However, Clinton decided against the strike, because half the UAE Royal Family would have been killed. This is because the UAE Royal Family, the very same people that OWN the now infamous Dubai Ports World (its a state-owned company), were spending some quality time with Bin Laden. These clowns over in the UAE, the same people that openly embraced the Taliban's existence and laundered money for al Queda operations, were openly friends of Bin Laden.....now Bush trusts those very same guys to run our ports. I would say I'm surprised, but, remember, Bush's dad was having breakfast with Bin Laden's freaking brother during the 9/11 attacks.....no one found that strange, so this port deal must be no big deal.
Pat Robertson Helps Clean Those Hard to Reach Places
Guest Columnist Hakos just got back from taking some of his high school students to Washington D.C. where, as part of the trip, the group met with Rev. Pat Robertson. Seriously. Greg shares his thoughts on the experience:"'You just harshly criticized the president about his handling of the Katrina Crisis; however, you supported him during his re-election. What will it take for you not to support President Bush?' "'Nice thing about Christianity is that we believe in Forgiveness.' "This was Pat Robertson’s response during a question and answer session with high school students this past Saturday in Washington, D.C. Sure, he said it somewhat jokingly, but this principle of forgiveness has become a relative mercy used only as a convenience. The same response was not used in reference to some of the reverend’s other comments. "Superbly and passionately, Mr. Robertson criticized most everything in his talk. Robertson smashed FEMA and its Arabian Horseman; Robertson bashed bulging bureaucracies, and he warned of the threat of those evil-doers in the Middle East. "In contrast, he praised his own efforts in cleaning up Katrina and helping those in need. With the snap of the fingers, Robertson’s angelic magic brought truckloads of supplies to needed areas around New Orleans, such as St. Bernard Church. The displays of such human power do make it difficult to argue his connections with God. Still, Robertson comes off as rather selective in his allocation of God’s wealth. "Much of his ideology lies in the belief that some people are innately evil, and evilness hurls them down roads of instability and dangerous damnation. There exists no acceptance that there might be a cause to one’s evil. Therefore, Robertson tends to want to destroy the evil-doer in order to solve the problem. No effort is made to uncover the root cause—trimming the branches of the diseased tree might be easier; yet, digging up the roots will stop its disease from spreading. "I must hand it to Mr. Robertson for his calmness and confidence—I can only dream of such strength in these qualities. Students’ difficult questions and luminous accusations were met with a relaxed disposition and smooth answers by the reverend. At the same time, his answers often left listeners confused. His popular response to questions regarding some of his ominous quotes, such as those referring to the assassination of Venezuela’s leader Hugo Chavez, was one of denial. 'The comment was taken out of context,' he said in one instance. Most amazing, however, was his inability to hold to his denial, proving his true beliefs. After denying the meaning of his comment regarding Chavez, Mr. Robertson ended his remark by suggesting that if anybody wanted to 'take out' Chavez that it wouldn’t be a bad idea. "Still, the greatest moment came with his response to a student’s question regarding Robertson’s comment aimed at Dover, Pennsylvania. When asked about his thoughts on intelligent design, Robertson said, 'Evolution has become the religion of America.' Wow. You gotta hand it to the guy. Really, if evolution is bogus, then why did God give some guys, like Robertson, bigger balls than others? I mean, come on."
To veto or not to veto...
One week left. One week from today, President Bush will have his last chance to veto the sale of shipping operations at six major U.S. seaports to a United Arab Emirates-owned firm.
FROM FOX NEWS: On Tuesday, President Bush said objections to the deal are unfair, and DP World, the 7th largest international port operator in the world, deserves to be judged by the same rules as the British-owned P&O. "I think it sends a terrible signal to friends around the world that it's OK for a company from one country to manage the port, but not a country that plays by the rules and has got a good track record from another part of the world can't manage the port," Bush said. Aside from Mr. Bush’s confusing double negative…I agree. If it is true that UAE has been a reliable, long time ally and played a key role in support of the War on Terror then I’m afraid I agree with the President. Of course this company should have to pass a rigorous review process (just as I want and expect any foreign company to have to go through) but being Arab shouldn't be an automatic disqualification from doing business with us, especially if you're our ally. Many Dems at this site argued fervently against racial profiling of Arabs by airport security. Is it any different to paint every company from any Arab nation with the same probably-a-terrorist brush? Are we O.K. with other foreign companies controlling the shipping operations at our ports, just as long as they're not Arab?
I have yet to hear a good justification to deny this company’s bid, other than the fact that they’re Arab and Arabs can't be trusted. Please, tell me what I'm missing here.
Cool February For Bush Administration
Blackwell Goes Real Negative Real Early
The Blackwell for Governor campaign has put out a new television spot tearing fellow Republican Jim Petro a new one. Let the infighting begin!!!
*remember to press play and then pause to allow the video time to load* This is one nasty commercial and I love it. Blackwell just did the kind of ad that Ted Strickland could run the last week in October. Obviously Blackwell is trying to get the scandals out there early. He must be hoping to distance himself, make them old news by fall, and take his primary opponent down in the process. Nice idea, but so stupid to go this negative this early. Petro has plenty of time to respond and there is a good chance for a negative backlash against Blackwell from base Republicans. Look at what the party chairman said in the comments! This negative ad has so many positives for Democrats and I hope it is a sign of a bitter primary ahead. Thank you Ken Blackwell!
How are empires measured?
I recently picked up the book Rogue Nation by Clyde Prestowitz...
