Where Does It Stop?

"In an executive order published last week in the Federal Register, Mr. Bush said that each agency must have a regulatory policy office run by a political appointee, to supervise the development of rules and documents providing guidance to regulated industries. The White House will thus have a gatekeeper in each agency to analyze the costs and the benefits of new rules and to make sure the agencies carry out the president’s priorities."

This is a direct example of the Executive taking from the Legislative branch. What a coincidence that this happened now that the Democrats are in control!

So the President signs statements claiming control over everything. Then he does his bullshit "signing statements" which attempt to override laws passed by Congress. Plus, Bush cannot be stopped despite two thirds of Americans (and Congress) opposed to Bush's plan for escalation.

When one man has this much power, are we really living in a Democracy anymore?

I try to not get over dramatic on the whole "our Democracy is dying" thing, but sometimes you have to wonder.

What I do know, is that if you let Bush, he would seriously turn the greatest country in the world into a dictatorship. What a sicko.

Oh, and we know the Supreme Court won't do anything.

Chuck, I'm so glad you posted this. Bush is taking over this country and turning it into whatever he wants, despite the constitution, despite the majority of Americans, despite reason and logic. I am afraid for our future every day, and then this stuff happens and I realize I have a reason to be afraid. If he doesn't already have the power, he'll just take it. As if the constitution was wrong to establish a balance of power.

Bush would not know "Balance of Power" if it bit him in the package.

I wish you guys would come out with a plan instead of whining about Bush. Obviously changes need to be made in Iraq, Bush says the answer is more troops. What do you say...Remove our troops, ok well what do we do about the mess we leave in Iraq. We abandon those people creating more hatred of Americans, it becomes yet another terrorist state, and instead of fighting terrorist in the middle east we fight them in the states. I just wish people who don't agree with Bush would come up with a plan that was well thought out and involved more than just saying bring home our troops. It's easy to point out problems it's a much more difficult to solve them.

i love how all these republicans always tell us to come up with a plan in stead of whining. news flash buddy, even if we had a plan no one in washington is listening. 70% of people don't like bush and wish he wasn't president, just as many opposse the troop build up and the war. i thought our elected officials were suppossed to carry out our will? america is a bullshit, fake democracy. it's run by two parties that don't care what the american people want, they will say anything to get elected so they can get there hand in the cookie jar, and try to put forward there own agenda, or the agenda of their political party.
When will this discracefulness end. no one care about it, everyone just bickers back and forth about they issues of their party. it's time people actually give a shit that this government is killing our country and the the very reason this country was founded. it makes me sick.

anon,
Democrats have been coming up with plans all along. One included sending our troops to the border to stop terrorists from entering Iraq. Another is to take up the Iraq Study group's recommendations to involve Iraq's neighbors. Democrats also want some standards of evaluation for Bush's plan to send more troops.

What happens when the escalation doesn't work? What does the Iraq government have to do to get more of our tax dollars? At what point do we declare this a success... or when do we re-evaluate and come up with another plan? None of these questions are answered by BushCo's plans. How about going in with more troops in the first place? Perhaps the president should HAVE A PLAN B!

In case you haven't noticed, the president doesn't listen to or allow anyone else to have any ideas or input on decisions. Did you read the article Chuck referenced?

D, Didn't you start a blog? It's nice to see you back!

As long as you have Gonzales telling Bush, "Do what you want, and I'll paraphrase the Constitution enough to make it seem legal", you're going to have this kind of legal plundering.

And enough with saying the Democrats don't have a plan. You can't unscramble an egg and all of this handwringing about finding an equitable solution in Iraq is nothing more than an attempt to save face and buy time to shift the blame to everyone not paying attention.

The best analogy I've heard about Iraq was this:

Bush and Cheney are driving a car with two Democrats in the back seat. Bush drives the car off a cliff and as they are going down, Cheney turns to the Democrats and says, " Unless you guys come up with a plan real quick, we're all going to die".

Buckle up.

The press and the demococrats say the election was about Americans wanting us out of Iraq. If this is true why are we debating a non-binding resolution? To support a non-binding resolution is nothing more than avoiding any potential consequences down the road. Now I understand what Howard
Dean meant when on the eve of the election he spelled out the various action plans of his party when they reclaimed the majority but when asked about Iraq he said "the is Bush's war" and proceeded to ramble on about how the executive branch is in charge of the conduct of the war.
What is the purpose of our electoral system? Is it to maximize ones power and everything else is a means to that end?

Fred,
In a way I have to agree with Dean and even Hillary, who made similar statements yesterday. This is Bush's war. We have to deal with it.

I personally think we are passed this dems are "whiners and have no plan talk". Obviously the public feels we have a plan with the last elections.

in respone to anon..What do you say...Remove our troops(that is a idea...think about it before you bash it), ok well what do we do about the mess we leave in Iraq(How do you know that there will be a mess in Iraq if we leave, just like you knew we would be greeted as liberators and just like you knew about the WMD's right? Your credibility is shot). We abandon those people creating more hatred of Americans(create more hatred then the actual war has created already?? I doubt that..a majority of Iraq's don't want use there, most of their goverment does not want us there and they some actually call us occupiers), it becomes yet another terrorist state(correction: It IS a terrorist state, but they are blowing up our troops in the process, there is more terrorism there now, then before we went there), and instead of fighting terrorist in the middle east we fight them in the states(do you seriously believe this or just say it because you think it sounds cool? Once again thanks for predicting the future but just like we would only need 150,000 troops your credibility is shot). I just wish people who don't agree with Bush would come up with a plan that was well thought out and involved more than just saying bring home our troops(I don't know about everyone else, but I have heard of a few well thought out plans for Iraq, I would encourage you to read up young jedi, though our plans do not consist of cool catchphrases like "we'll smoke them out of their caves" so it may take some a brain to understand them). It's easy to point out problems it's a much more difficult to solve them.(The first step to solving problems is to point them out and figure out why we have this problem in the first place but atleast you admit we have a problem)

You keep asking questions that you already know the answers to. Of course it's about power and control. That's all it's ever been about whether its the electing a Pope or a meeting of NASCAR team owners. Fortunately our Founding Fathers understood this about human nature and set up the three branches government to establish a balance. That the Bush Administration chooses to ignore the Constitution, Congressional oversight, and basic human rights among other things, shouldn't be a shock to anyone now ,including the enablers who renewed Boy George's contract.

You ask these questions and I imagine Danny Ainge's face when he used to get called for a foul.
( I know not everyone is going to get the reference, but if you do.......)

Fred, the non-binding resolution was a step. It was spineless, but it was a first step. They couldn't just go in and say "ok. we're taking all the troops out of Iraq tomorrow." They had to gague support and get people on the record as not supporting the escalation, then, they will take another step and ask their fellow Senators to live up to their word and solve the problem.

They've been in power less than a month. Give 'em a minute. The Democrats will get this war ended.

Terra, if putting forth a non-binding resolution is spineless, then what would you call doing nothing for the last 3 years ? That's spineless. Diplomacy
( which we accuse Bush of having none) dictates that Bush be given every opportunity to solve this problem on his own. The non-binding resolution is a warning shot. Bush may not have felt it, but he should have heard it. Having said that his iPod is probably turned all the way up these days.

anonymous, you ask for solutions. Here is my solution to this problem I mention: don't act like a dictator. Maybe that means President Pelosi. happy?

fred, as terra said, it is a step. I heard Joe Biden speak to the strategy: build a broad coalition of senators from both sides of the aisle (75?). pass this resolution. then move on, towards funding, etc.

the other thing, which you should know, is that the war is funded thru 2007. Meaning, the escalation really cannot be stopped in the near future. hence, this slow pace is acceptable.
(and sure, it would be nice if they acted more swiftly, but it is just not the way its gonna be. dems want/need republcans to help stop this - a quick, hostile approach will not do that)

Chuck thanks for mentioning that it's funded through 2007. I'll bet a lot of folks didn't know that incuding me. That explains quite a bit.
