Maverick Senator John McCain Is Back

McCainLA Times on John McCain's stop this past Wednesday in California with Governor Schwarzenegger:
"I would assess this administration's record on global warming as terrible," McCain said, recalling that he got "no cooperation from the administration" at Senate hearings on the subject. He pronounced himself "very happy to see the president mention global warming and a renewed commitment from the administration to this issue." But he added tartly: "It's long overdue."
ABC News on McCain's stop in South Carolina this past Monday:
"I think that Donald Rumsfeld will go down in history as one of the worst secretaries of defense in history," McCain said to applause.
I remember when I was a kid my dad used to fix baked fish and I hated it. He made me eat it and I plugged my nose at the dinner table and choked down the fish. It seems to me that John McCain can't plug his nose and stick to RNC talking points anymore.
Welcome back Senator.

I disagree. He said those things strictly to please his audience, not because he meant them. In CA, they're actually concerned about global warming and he was looking for some applause. And everyone knows Rumsfeld was the worst Defense Secretary ever. It's going to take a lot more for him to "be back."

(I used to swirl my fish in ketchup. Yuck!)

I agree. He said those things to please the audience. In the context of McCain as a candidate for the nomination of the Republican Party, these statements are pretty shocking. What plays well on the docks in Los Angeles harbor won't do as well in the pews at Bob Jones University. I can assure you that they aren't praising global warming and bashing Don Rumsfeld on the AM dial. So, relative to the views of the Republican base I think these statements are pretty maverickish.

Republicans were starting to warm up to McCain because they thought he was one finally one of them. In this week's Kutuchief and Keeler Talk Politics, Ben said McCain was starting to come around. Will that still be his view next week? Stay tuned.

As Giuliani and McCain vie for the middle, there is a perfect opening for a conservative who is to the right of their platforms. This is great news for Democrats. A more moderate sounding candidate like McCain or Giuliani would be more difficult for us to beat. The good news is that the Republican base is FAR from where the rest of the country is on a lot of issues. The right wing isn't so vast anymore. I want them to get a candidate for President that represents their views. Can we start collecting signature for Ken Blackwell?

I can't even remember when you ate fish Terra. Oh but I do remember you couldn't get enough McDonalds cheeseburgers and would get mad at me if I wouldn't stop. Maybe that's why you are a veggie now!

Please....Hillary is the fraud. McCain has been a constant critic of Rumsfeld, so this is entirely consistent with McCain's war views.

Won't McCain be about 110 years old by the next presidential election?? Kyle has a better chance of getting nominated.

There are millions upon millions of moderate Republicans who want to see Giuliani in the Whitehouse. He would be a tough candidate for any Democrat to beat.

whats funny to me is that the CA global warming events were tagged by his staff as "non political" events.....like he would have been there if he wasnt running for President. please.

Id say he still has a better chance to get the Republican nomination than Kyle though.

I don't trust McCain any more than I would Lieberman. Persona non-grata, as far as I'm concerned.

Hillary v. McCain would be interesting, since they are both frauds.

BTW can such a populist politician really be called a maverick??

That would be like calling all the republicans that are critical of president bush "mavericks."

I didnt always agree with John McCain but I would have voted for him because he was a man of character. He said what he believed. Where has that man gone?
I quess when you want something as badly as he does honesty is no longer an option.

fred, you summed it up.

brian, i think lieberman can be trusted much more. Lieberman has been consistent (and wrong) on Iraq. Mccain just says whatever.

If I were a democrat, I would love McCain. Even though he may have to lie through his teeth to get an applause out of his audience, he gives credibility to Democratic ideas whenever he crosses over party lines, and since his party hates him, he gains little for making such sacrifices.

Jeff, I think McCain is a maverick relative to what the Republican base wants to hear.

I think he is a person who has stayed way to long.

His service to his country has been honorable up until about 2000...Its painful to watch him as a hanger-onner to his discredit.

Past few years, He has looked as if his goes in and out and in and out of insanity. I hurt to observe this
