A Message To Our Democratic Nominees
Do not allow yourself to be micromanaged. Do not allow your true character to show. Do not hide your passion. Do not hide your sense of humor. Basically, do not pull an Al Gore.
Last night, Al Gore displayed many of the wonderful qualities that he kept hidden in 2000. He showed a good sense of humor during a genuinely funny segment with Leonardo DiCaprio, where Gore said his emotions had taken over.....he was going to make announcement....but the music ran him off stage before he could finish - it was funny. Gore also showed his passion for global warming, a very important issue, and continued to frame the issue in open, non-political terms. He also showed an ability to move people, when several people spoke emotionally of his leadership on the issue of global warming.
This Al Gore was hidden in 2000. After a boring primary against Bill Bradley, Gore just remained a bit sedated, while always talking about lock-boxes for social security. Of course, every issue he discussed, even in this sedated manner, was a stronger position than Bush. He would have kept the balanced budget and further preserved social security. He is a diligent worker, so he would have met with his terrorism czar prior to 9/11. And after 9/11 (if it happened), he would have created a plan for energy independence....not a plan to kill thousands of people in a disastrous war. Oh, and he is an original thinker that has already invested America's future in the internet.....how is that going?
Now, you might say, but the boring Al Gore won the 2000 presidency. That is true. But we must come prepared for stolen elections and plan on massive victories. We cannot allow an election be turned by mis-votes for Pat Buchanan or minority voter suppression. Al Gore could have won bigger. He could have made it so Bush and the Supreme Court could not steal the election. He should have let the real Al Gore shine.
Related: Why do the Oscars run one hour over the scheduled finish? Every speech ended in a timely manner, so it really makes no sense. This is not a sporting event, where the end is uncertain. They script the whole thing. Anyway, I suggest less dumb movie collages, and less dumb awards (short films, where do you even see those?). Finally, I have to begrudging say that I thought Ellen was funny. However, there was no humor like last year's Three 6 Mafia performance.

A few other things....
- Gore is even greater because he is friends with Larry David....perhaps he will be on the new season of Curb?
- Only idiots don't believe in global warming. I am talking about the type of people that don't believe in dinosaurs. The seriousness of the problem is debatable. The existence of the problem is not.
The only people denying this are uneducated goofs that refuse to acknowledge the basic scientific conclusions.
Oh, and as for those few clown scientists that disagree....thos are literally the same scientists that doubted the links to cancer and smoking.
Why isn't Gore a nominee?
- not sure about Obama
Chuck,
What has happened to your sense of humor? Al Gore and Ellen are funny to you. Arizona must be turning you into a loser.
Chuck, I agree with your thoughts about 2000. They needed to cut Gore loose and let him be himself.
If he is going to run for the presidency, I'm glad he don't choose the Oscar's for his announcement. That would have been just stupid.
Good for Al Gore!
Excellent Movie, very scientific
You guys are so cute when you try to sound smart.
Cute! WATCH IT - SIZZLE BRITCHES
anyone see that thing about how al gore's average electric bill for last year was 20 TIMES that of the average tennesseean's?
al gore's a capitalist who is taking young idealists (naifs) like you for a ride and laughing all the way to the bank.
good for him, bad for truth in politics.
Thats ridiculous..
look it up bro. what's ridiculous is saying "that's ridiculous" without addressing the issue - that the gore family's electricity consumption is 20 times that of the average tennessee household's.
My favorite part of the Oscars, of which I watched very little was during the one part where they were saying what people can do to save energy or whatever and two of the things that flashed on the screen behind them were "take light rails" and "take public transportation." I am sure most people in the audicnce at the Shrine Auditorium are not going to be taking the bus anytime soon. I know the message was directed at commoners like us not the famous, but it was kind of striking.
It was a weak year for best picture, thats for sure.....
And yes, that is true about Gore's house. True, he probably has a bigger house than most people, and that he is certainly entitled to, so his bill / usage is bound to be larger. But the point of his consumption is still valid.
If Gore is on Curb liking him, 46%
Russ, hope you feel better.
Anonymous, Al Gore operates completely "green", meaning for every bit of energy he does use, he buys credits to compensate. He is the dead opposite of whatever you are accusing. nice try.
Just like when he takes a flight, he purchases offsets.
Yes. Offsets.
You just said ridiculous twice- NO TAP BACKS
There is a spurious test you can take to see if are a polluter - I am a 5x polluter - so I guess that makes me 1/4 as rich as the Gore Family????
I think those Anonymous entries are RECRUITERS
Ben: I watched Departed last weekend. Its the most gratuitous violent movie I have ever seen.
Acting was superb but the graphic violence, in my opinion, washed out the quality of the picture.
Nicholson and DiCaprio were tops as actors. Nicholson was almost a parody of himself.
But all the gunplay was pretty sickening.
Thge guy (Gore) is trying to do something GOOD. - Warn the world about Climate Change.
I guess thats sum rational enough for the right wingees to sic the character assassination dogs on him & his family.
Not only does Gore offset his energy, he buys it from a local provider. And they are switching to solar and wind power. They make an effort and set an example for what people can do. What do people expect?!

Chuck...you are so full of crap! Do you even QUESTION ANYTHING that you totally agree with? Are you that blind and trusting of your Democratic leaders????
Gore's ties to Occidental Petroleum

Clinton/Gore campaign takes Occidental donations.
And just to keep Terra happy, a link to the BBC:

Gore Isn't Quite as Green as he led the World to Believe - USA Today.
You guys piss and moan I'm sure about Dick Cheney's ties to Halliburton, but why can't you at least be honest with yourselves and admit Gore is a fucking lying, self-serving, apocalyptic, hypocritical shitbag??
Al Gore blows the direction of the poles, and you guys in turn drop to your knees and blow Al. It's sick! I can be honest with myself and admit Bush has done a pathetic job with the war in Iraq up until the surge (we'll see). He's been weak on illegal immigration. The man's public speaking skills are appalling!
But you guys have freaking blinders on when it comes to your rock star candidates. Frustrating! Please tell me that you can look at these links to documented sources and say, with a straight face, that Al Gore isn't trying to capitalize on your fears of global warming for political/financial gain.
Please.Get.A.Clue.
Dammit! The first and fifth link aren't working! Let me try this...since I don't want to cut and paste because, God forbid, Chuck get his panties in a twist.
Here's the link to the google search, in case anyone actually cares to read all the links:

Russ, he is making attempts, which is more than most can say. That's my point. I'm not interested in Gore's investments. He is the spokesman behind scientists who don't live in large houses and are trying to enlighten people about a world-wide problem. Gore is taking steps to make his home "greener" with solar panels, wind, and local energy suppliers.
Comparing Gore owning stock in a gas company (which we all probably do if we have a 401k or mutual fund) to Cheney owning Halliburton and STARTING AN ILLEGAL WAR(S) OF CHOICE to benefit the company are so vastly different I'm surprised anyone could even publish a comment with that comparison.
That's it! Terra just proved my point. Terra, OXY isn't a "gas company." They engage primarily in the exploration, development, production, and marketing of crude oil and natural gas in the United States and internationally. They drill.
You didn't even read any of the links (that worked, anyway), did you? You only hear what it is you want to hear...read what you want to read...and blatently IGNORE facts. We're not talking a few shares in a 401k, Terra. We're talking shares valued between 500k - $1 million. If oil is helping kill this planet, he could easily sell the stock and be done.
Capital gains? 15% tops...and well worth the price of saving our planet BEFORE IT EATS US ALIVE!!!
Unless it's all bullshit. Or unless he's greedy and not as caring as he hopes you suckers believe.
Gore's home in Carthage sits on a zinc mine that he receives $20k a year in royalties from Pasminco Zinc, which operates a zinc concession on his property. Tennessee has cited the company for adding large quantities of barium, iron and zinc to the nearby Caney Fork River.
He's a hypocrite...like many on the left. Barbara Streisand suggests drying your clothes on a clothesline, but the bitch air conditions a 10,000 sq. ft. barn that holds...HER MEMOROBILIA!!!
John Travolta preaches global warming, but houses not one, but two Lear jets that he jaunts back and forth from his home in California (obvious too good to fly *gulp* first class).
It's bullshit. You guys just can't admit it - and that's sad.
And Petey...try reading links 2, 3, 4, and 6 before you spout off.
Al Gore has profited, and continues to profit from big oil and a polluting zinc company. As a senator, he allowed an indian burial ground in california to be tore up so Occidental Petroleum could drill (funny...same company he is a major shareholder in).
Geez Louise...read the freaking stories and use the brains you all claim to have.
How about you read the stories. You're talking about the zinc mine. The top of the USA Today story you linked to says In this column that appeared Aug. 10 on the Forum Page, writer Peter Schweizer inaccurately stated that former vice president Al Gore receives royalties from a zinc mine on his property in Tennessee despite his environmental advocacy. He no longer does, as the mine was closed in 2003.
And FYI, Terra. Cheney retired from Halliburton in 2000. His severence package was not reliant on Halliburton getting business from iraq. However, before entering office in 2001, Cheney bought an insurance policy that guaranteed a fixed amount of deferred payments from Halliburton each year for five years so that the payments would not depend on the company's fortunes. He is legally bound by an agreement he signed which turns over power of attorney to a trust administrator to sell the options at some future time and to give the after-tax profits to three charities. The agreement specifies that 40% will go to the University of Wyoming (in Cheney's home state), 40% will go to George Washington University's medical faculty to be used for tax-exempt charitable purposes, and 20% will go to Capital Partners for Education. The agreement states that it is "irrevocable and may not be terminated, waived or amended," preventing Cheney from taking back the options at a later date.
Anymore wild conspiracy theories, Terra?
Granted, Osama Bin Laden mentioned Halliburton in a taped message...and come to think of it, who should the left believe? A terrorist, no doubt!!!
This post has been removed by the author.
What about the oil, Terra?
Am I supposed to get excited that he's not getting royalties from a zinc mine because the mine closed??? It's not like he voluntarily turned over the checks and lobbied to get the company to clean up.
The mine closed.
and zinc is the tiny part of the big picture. What about the oil? His family has lifelong ties to OXY. You crush Bush over this, but stroke Al. You are a hypocrite. Plain and simple.
Russ: OHHHHHHHHHH DAMN, I HATE AL NOW!
Trashing that Indian burial ground - hell he may has well have KILLED KENNY!
Hey Tommorow, lets all get together and character assassinate Lyndon LaRouche and Roger Ebert
Petey - aren't you the same person who has on more than one occassion brought up the link between the Nazi's and the Bush family - pretty much just to character assassinate? Not that it matters - pretty much every politician and person involved with politis for that matter is a hypocrite, but it is a little ridiuclous for you to jump all over someone for doing the same thing you do.
Mike , the difference is 1.)The Bush family legacy is history and public record 2.)I thought this thread was just a pissing match over who's guy was the more chaste. 3) I am not taking all this very seriously, are you guys? Isnt this all just some type of chummy/bloggo/game 4.)I hope Russ is not sobbing over a Tequila over my treatment of him, You are not a Hypocrite.....maybe a ditto....& if it makes you guys feel better
We are all sinners! Hallelujah!
Russ,
Surely you understand that it is not actions that count but sentiment. Conservatives intentions are not idealistic while liberals are. The actions or consequences are of little value it is the INTENT

I think this thread will inevitably take us to Tralfamadore
Bon Voyageeeee
so if Al Gore didn't own stock in oil, you would believe global warming is real and important?
Perhaps you haven't noticed, but we are critical of the hypocrisy. You see that Gore owns stock in an oil company. I see that he is trying to convince people to make small changes in their lives to make a big difference in the world. He is also changing the energy supply of his house from non-renewable to renewable energy and he offsets his carbon usage. Sure, I wish he didn't own stock in an oil company, but his message is still true and important, and he is changing his lifestyle to reinforce the message. These things take time.
Russ, I had not read that before. It is interesting, and I am going to look further into it.
Sure, i still feel positive things about Gore, and like terra said, he is doing a lot of positive things. But i don't like hypocrisy. I am going to look into it more.
so no, i am not some sucker that will feed into anything.
(but whatever the case in Gore's personal life, he would have been a great president with past focus on the internet, social security, and innovative ideas in disaster response.....george bush and every other republican fails to come close to his type of vision)
*Sniff* I just got all misty-eyed reading Chuck's response. And Chuck...I'll be very interested in what you find, whether it backs or breaks my research. Thank you. We can argue/talk the social security part of your post later.
Terra - We're not connecting yet, my dear woman. You say I don't think global warming is real or important. I do believe global warming is real. I dispute the cause...and I DON'T want to go into that argument here.
All I am saying is that Al Gore failed politically, and he keeps trying to make up for it. Democrats even made fun of him until he got the nod on the nomination. Anyway...my point. The Gore's have a history of trying to capitalize on our biggest fears. In the '80's, Tipper lead the battle on getting those little parental warning labels on CD's. Her war was primarily on the heavy metal genre (of which...believe it or not...I was a part of regionally). She founded the Parents Music Research Center (PMRC)and proceeded to try and convince the country that little Johnny killed himself because he listened to Ozzy Osbourne. To me, the Gore's are opportunists who try to capitalize on our fears.
And just so you know...I have no problem with alternative energy...and that includes nuclear energy. I believe we need to stop polluting the air. Period. Just because it would be the right thing to do. I PRAY we decrease our independence on oil (not just foreign oil). I plant trees. I clean other people's trash out of wilderness areas when I backpack. I drag soda and beer cans up if I see them when I dive. I'm not some evil industrialist out to rape the planet. I believe in doing the best you can do without shocking our economy.
Plus I look good with a tan anyway.
Russ, good for - your last paragraph......are they going to pull your GOP card if they see that?
