Try A Surge Of Concern For Our Troops
Democratic Senator Carl Levin from yesterday's Meet The Press:"Where we need a surge is not in Iraq, we need a surge of concern for our troops, for the veterans, for the injured, for the wounded, for the families of those who lost loved ones. That's the surge of concern, and that's the surge that we need."Amen Senator.
In a related piece, the lead story on last night's 60 Minutes was on a petition drive started by military personnel. Here is how the petition titled An Appeal for Redress reads:
1,402 active duty, reserve, or National Guard troops have signed the petition. If you saw the segment last night, it was clear that the soldiers featured on the panel had a difficult time with their decision to go public. In my view, our soldiers have earned the right to publicly communicate their view on the war to their Member of Congress prior to or after their deployment. Part of supporting our troops is listening to them.
As a patriotic American proud to serve the nation in uniform, I respectfully urge my political leaders in Congress to support the prompt withdrawal of all American military forces and bases from Iraq . Staying in Iraq will not work and is not worth the price. It is time for U.S. troops to come home.
On a side note, 60 Minutes correspondent Lara Logan is dreamy.

I have to make this anonymous, but I just received an email from a LT - commanding a company in Iraq.
This is what he said:
"This has gone on way too long"
They all feel like that and wish to go home to their families ASAP
I just read the 60 minutes piece.
GI's objecting to their commander's orders is a sign of just how much Bush has De-moralized our military.
GI's by nature do not have this prerogative. They must feel as if they are literally meat at this point.
The Military is very much damaged by recent deployments in Iraq and the Nation is therefore weakened.
Now to talk of prosecuting ANOTHER(Iran) war on top of this......

yup-once currently serving active duty troops are speaking on the record for a withdrawal means morale has hit the floor, it is time to wrap this up and get out by Jan of '08. It is over, this folly can have no positive outcome. This is going to be an albatross on HRC as well, her refusal to admit a mistake on the authorization is the exact same mentality that Bush has, and I will not support her because of this. It is now btwn Edwards and Obama for me, and whoever better expresses how to extricate ourselves from Iraq will have my campaign dollars and support. NO other issue is of any similar magnitude, and while I can see different sides to issues like health care and education etc. Any support or passive opposition will be an indication of a person who is wrong and my political enemy.

Watching Lara Logan makes it hard to concentrate on the story - right on Kyle.

Our GI's are tired of this war and just want to go home.
Sure they do their duty and give their commander his military due- but its only that: their duty.
I will add this: Older Vets are against this war too, Many are not shy about calling the Commander incompetent or even insane.

No I'm not. From Public Opinion Strategies, about two weeks ago:
* 57% believe “The Iraq War is a key part of the global war on terrorism.”
* 57% “support finishing the job in Iraq, that is, keeping the troops there until the Iraqi government can maintain control and provide security for its people.
* 50% want our troops should stay and “do whatever it takes to restore order until the Iraqis can govern and provide security to their country” while only 17% favor immediate withdrawal
* 56% believe “Even if they have concerns about his war policies, Americans should stand behind the President in Iraq because we are at war.”
* 53% believe “The Democrats are going too far, too fast in pressing the President to withdraw the troops from Iraq.”
