Culture of Obedience

rockyFirst, I am pretty tired of the "culture of" description of everything. Culture of corruption, Culture of indecency, what next... the Culture of bad pet food?

However, the mayor of Salt Lake City, Rocky Anderson, recently discussed the Culture of Obedience we have going on in this country. No one questions anything - the press certainly doesn't. (Like the war, for example) Here's what he has to say:

“There’s a real resistance to change and an almost pathological devotion to leaders simply because they’re leaders,” he said. Anderson also calls for Bush's impeachment as "the first step toward national reconciliation — and toward penance for the outrages committed in our nation’s name.”

The people of SLC aren't following him just because he's a leader anymore. He has created quite a stir in the mayor's office not only by firing several staff members, but also by being conscious of global warming and its impact on the surrounding area, including the Great Salt Lake. That has ostracized him, and the city, from the Republican controlled state government. Anderson said he won't seek a third term, and will instead devote his time to issues such as human rights and global warming. But he does make a good point about the Culture of Obedience.

Not following the Culture of Obedience

Bishops in the Episcopal church have rejected calls to create dual leadership to represent the conservative anti-gay members. They said "they are unwilling to compromise the Episcopal Church’s autonomy and its commitment to full equality for all people, including gay men and lesbians."

Unrelated: The pet food tragedy is likely caused by contamination of wheat gluten. Did you know that dogs and cats don't need wheat gluten in their diet? Yeah. It's filler. Would they eat wheat gluten in the wild? Probably not.
The story makes me think of the lady who went to her butcher to ask for "grass fed beef" and the butcher said "I don't think you can feed grass to cows." There's a problem here.

I'm very glad to see the Episcopal Church in the USA follow the Gospels for direction instead of surveys or donor lists or whatever.

that sucks that Anderson is not running for reelection. He has been so hard on Bush, and its great. I always wondered how he gets away with it, especially since he still insists on impeachment.

and he is right about the obedience thing.

Terra - that pet food story is awful and I can't imagine how bad I would feel if my pet died from food I fed it.

On the wheat gluten thing - it isn't just filler - it is put into the food for consitency and palatability. If pet food was exactly like what those animals ate in the wild then it would just be a bag of meat and hair (or meat and scales in the case of fish) - hence there woudl be no need for the pet food since you could just go to the butcher to buy raw meat.

My favorite dog was always just fedreal people food - we mostly the cheapest or near cheapest steak fromthe grocery store woudl be his dinner (though he became picky over the years and would pout if he didn't get garlic salt on the steak).

My cats and dog eat Nutro Naturals dry food. That company is on the list, so I'm glad we don't give them the pouch or canned food. It's good food - doesn't have corn and other crap in it. It's so scary that people buy good food for their pets and it ends up poisoning them.

Our vet told us to start giving the cats more canned food because they need more protein. They eat Paul Newman's canned food sometimes, again, because it doesn't have the crap in it. It's as close as I can get to stopping at the meat counter. I would be devastated if any of my pets got sick. It's a horrible story!

There is a Culture of Obedience in this country and laws like the Patriot Act are making it harder and harder to be disobedient.

Radical Activism is nearly non-existent. Mostly due to the fact that our generation is mainly a bunch of pussies. We conform to the normal and we mostly follow like blind lemmings.

Terra- according to the breaking news story on CNN it looks like it may not have been the wheat gluten after all, but instead appears to be rat poison. I can't imagine how that would get in pet food other than a derranged employee but that is absolutely awful.

My dogs food Eukenaba , was on the contaminated list. I checked the serial numbers and we lucked out.

Mike, Terra, I would be totally pissed if my buddies died like that...

Possibly, this is Just another example of the consumer (in this case - your pet) getting not much due consideration (safety) from a corporation - I tend to think that the "profit motive" is just out of control...in other words: Todays corporation is a beast driven only by profit at the expense of everything else including your pet's health.

One of my cats dropped dead last August....I fed it food from Walmart...Hmmmm.

It looks like Menu Foods Income Fund does not have very secure/sanitary foods.

And another thought: Eukanuba, Iams...high priced food that is slopped together in the same shithole horemeat processing plant in Canada.

& its owned by "Menu Foods Income Fund" HMMMMmmmmmm

Somehow feel rippedOFF by those BIG brand Names????

I am going back to a long time trusted local outfit ; Dad's Pet Food - Meadville, Pa

Dad's Pet Foods

petey, I share your frustration. The list of pet foods that are owned or distributed by Menu Foods is enormous! No wonder so many pets will be affected. If they were the small company that I thought (and you probably did too) they were, only the pets that ate the one brand would be sick. It's easier to trace and the loss would be smaller.

I check their website daily to see if dry food is added. I'm nervous.

Even if they weren't all owned by the same company you would still have a substantial risk as many different pet food companies source their ingredients from the same people so the risks spread beyond just one company's products.

It is amazing that so few people realize just how many brands roll up into one company.

My three dogs used to race each other to see who could get to the cat's shit first. They weren't as fussy as their owners.

Buy BilJac....great product-locally owned.

YA, I THINK THE LOCALLY OWNED is a good idea - as opposed to paying a big buck for a Brand name that is occultly all the same as 50 other brands.

Dad's used to be a top pet food co. - I used to see their "dead stock" truck picking up meat around Geauga county and sent to the meadville pet food plant. They also used to have delivery service - which I think is only avialable to kennels now. Dog owners locally , used to praise Dad's pet food

I do feel conned by the different brands (they are all the same subbed out stuff)

I checked out both Biljac and Dad's and they have corn as one of the first 3 ingredients. I want my pets eating meat more than corn, so I'm going to stick with Nutro. It's a personal choice - both where you get your food and what you want in it. It's good to see options out there though. (I think humans eat way too many corn products, and I don't want to put my pets in the same situation.)

Vari, You're absolutely right about the Patriot Act being a silencer.

According to this article, Iams, Nutro, and Eukanuba are private labels. I'm not sure how they're related to Menu Foods. This whole thing sickens me.

Fred, I had a stupid dog once too. Sweetest thing ever, but dumb as a rock.

It's true. I'm sad when people ask if I feed my pets meat. Of course! But stuff they don't need? Nope.

Terra - for your benefit, when you hear something is "private label" it means that a company, like Menu, produces the product and puts another company's label on it or their own label for a special local or non-national brand. i.e. If you went into Acme and bought the "Best Foods" brand of canned corn it is a private label probably produced by one of the major manufacturers and sold under a different brand.

What in the world is wrong with corn? I had a malamute/collie mix for 15 years that loved nothing better than corn on the cob. Ate it cob and all. All of our dogs ate corn and whatever else and all of them lived to be 15-17 years old. They all got plenty of exercise and good vet care... that's what matters. No corn... Terra please.

Menck, Dogs are garbage eaters by nature. I agree that a dog can be fed table scraps (within reason) and be perfectly healthy. I feed my YorkiePoo table food and soft canned food and some dog kibble.

Incidentally, some news sources state that Menu was distributing tainted food for some time and the problem is more widespread than we will ever know. I think they killed my cat last summer.

I imagine that due to Bush castrating regulation such as at the FDA, our human foods are full of crap too
