Bob, I know you don't tend to mull in analyzing the "politics" of decisions. but i am curious of your opinion.

Okay Robert, I laughed when I saw this. But enough about what pussies Senators are The overwhelming majority of Americans are still sitting on their hands when it comes to this war. I only wish Americans held themselves to the same standards they hold their representatives. When a half a million
people park their asses on the mall in Washington and make a statement, then I'll be more impressed.

Menk,
I hear you. I know I'm beating a dead horse here, that we've already posted twice on this and that it's not very productive.

It's just that I was sitting here watching all this "no confidence" coverage and the play on words hit me. I couldn't resist.

Also, there is something to be said about all this seemingly unproductive finger-pointing: it's important for libs to show that they can really be objective and lay equally harsh criticism on their side of the aisle when it's deserved. I'd rather conservatives be able to accuse me of unproductive finger-pointing than being a Dem apologist.

You make a good point with the march on Washington. I have to say, that at this point I would take off and travel to participate in something like this. I also think that I'm going to volunteer for Obama. I'm not sure what else I can do as a lone citizen. Suggestions?

Chuck,
Honestly, I'm baffled.

I can't see how a Dem who ran on an anti-war platform could justify this vote. There is all this talk about the backlash of 'not supporting the troops' but little talk about the more obvious backlash of, you know...not doing what you promised on the campaign trail.

Even from a totally pragmatic standpoint, I do not get it.

I still believe the nationwide Moratorium in 1969 was very effective in getting movement towards ending the war. We had a huge advantage back then in that the draft was a big motivator. It feels pretty damn strange today to think that instituting a draft now would be the quickest way to get us out of Iraq.

Life is strange.

I think the basic premise of those opposing the war from the beginning was that such a war would cause a massive destabilization of Iraq and create an impossible situation for the US to manage. The you break it you buy it scenario. Now that it's clear that this is the case, some of you here seem to think a single Congressional vote would improve the situation. Even if we pull out tomorrow ( which I don't oppose), it's not the end of the problem nor does it solve much.

Bush has been savaged for the last couple of years, and rightly so, for not having an exit strategy. Well sadly, neither do the Democrats. What do you propose we do if the resulting civil war causes 100,000 deaths in 30 days?

Somebody? Anybody?

I'll go on the record and say let the chips fall and then pour as much humanitarian aid in there as we can, as soon as we can. Does this scenario suck? Yeah it does. It's a fucking tragedy and it's why Bush should be tied to a horse naked and made to ride from the airport to the Green Zone.

Petey's right, until there's a Gold Star mother on every block nothing's going to change.

1.) suspend/cancel all pork "reconstruction" projects

2.) pull all American troops back into supersecure bases - cancel all police duties

3.)Crank up diplomatic efforts to place a policing force possibly from the UN, other neighboring countries- this would involve beg, borrowing & generally kissing ass to get some help

4.)Put out a reward/punishment package

5.) Use our spaceage military technology to enforce 4.

Hope for the best - try something else/ improvise if this snafus

I'll be attending the next protest in Washington. No question. WTF... I'm already on a list for protesting before the war started.

terra brings up that she allegedly has been placed on some kind of list a lot. it's cute.

have any of you considered that the democrats don't dare do what you want them to because they're fully aware that mainstream american thought isn't on the side of immediate withdrawal from iraq and allowing that young democracy to be left to the wolves?

just a thought...
