$20,000,000,000 arms sale to Saudis

OR>>> US attempts to bury Middle East under heap of weapons

evildoer
So let me get this strategy straight: After 9-11 the US hopes to protect itself by primarily: disarming terrorist networks and the UN-resolution-breaking nations capable of slipping them weapons of mass destruction; and secondarily: promoting democracy in the region.

So
it invades UN-resolution-breaking Iraq, inadvertently strengthening terrorist networks and destabilizing the country to the point that UN-resolution-breaking, nuke-building Iran threatens to dominate the region. Then it arms UN-resolution-breaking, anti-democratic Saudi Arabia to balance the Iran threat and promises further arms to UN-resolution-breaking Israel to compensate for the Saudi threat.*

Meanwhile to try to stabilize Iraq, the US arms the more 'nationalist side' of the anti-US insurgency while at the same time failing to arm the Iraqi army.

Someone please tell me I don't have my facts straight, cause the only strategy worse than what I've just described would be to arm al-Qaeda directly (like we did to counter the Russian threat).

I couldn't find a link for this, but in the latest edition of the NY Times they listed a specific dollar amount for the pledged increased military aid to Israel resulting from their discomfort over the Saudi sale.

Great link!

Liebermann and Hagee are insane...I will say, about 50 billion worth of hi-tech ordnance pumped into that area and the doomsday clock is groaning

I know it won't happen, but wouldn't it be poetic if it became our stated policy to arm the Russians to neutralize the al-Qaeda threat?

Saudi Arabia has done a great job with image control here in the U.S. considering 15 of the 9/11 hijackers were Saudi nationals.

Andrea Mitchell said on the news tonight that we are arming Saudi Arabia and Israel to contain Iran. She also said that we are asking for nothing in return from Saudi Arabia.

Has anyone read Secrets of the Kingdom by Gerald Posner? I think Posner would argue that we are arming Saudi Arabia to ensure stable oil prices. Iran is a secondary reason.

So whats the problem? You should thank our leaders. If They say no then the Saudis may ask them to get of the money train. Then they would be forced to take more of our money. It isnt about war and peace it is about the elite(Dem and Rep) being able to live in the style they deserve.

Andrea Mitchell is a long time Bush apologist. But even if she were correct, who is naive enough to think that we expect nothing in return from the Saudis ?

Robert, you couldn't have summed this whole mess up any better.

To Kyle: "to ensure stable oil prices. Iran is a secondary reason." Exactly. Glad to see others seeing what I'm seeing.

It's absolutely insane for anyone to think that the Bush regime has good intentions with this move. And now what do you think Iran is going to do? Maybe feel threatened, possible arm itself even more?

Fred, I we would have pursued the blame for 9-11 where it reightfully belonged - The Royal Sauds, by now we could have been squeezing oil out of their ballsacs
