So Harriet Miers, facing contempt charges, could serve time for shielding Bush. If so, she'll have the distinction of being the first Bush aid to really break the traditional paradigm (unqualified> negligent> disgraced), the first aid to face charges without even getting to taste the fruit of abuse-enticing power, the first aid who never really had a chance to prove her negligence.
The reality is that Miers, nor any other Bush crony, will ever see any real punishment for anything, but I can dream can't I? It'd be ironic though, no? A former Supreme Court Nominee behind bars for not showing up to court.I've always been a huge fan of The Onion and they say that, aside from cult-formation and ritual worship, impersonation is the highest form of flattery. Keep the humor coming but your party is losing the support of the people. The election was largely about two things. 1. The lack of connection between the Washington and the people. 2. The war.
Announcing that this would be the most ethical Congress in history was a great start but the voters perceive that it is business as usual. Listening to the shrill voice of the media one would believe that the Dems. sole domestic policy consists of destroying the Reps. through endless endless investigations, subpenas and calls for more hearings. Whether they are justified or not is beside the point to most people it is viewed as business as usual.
As far as the war the polls may be right but so many people are conflicted(unlike Viet Nam) and the passion for immediate action is absent. Perhaps a more honest approach would serve the party better. Educate the people about what a pullout really means. What type of presence will the US maintain in Iraq an how long a pullout will actually take. So far neither side has dealt with the issues. If you win the vote and a year from that date the pullout is still in process(which it has to be for the safety of the troops) and the discussion of the exact nature of Americas long term troop role in Iraq is being discussed the Dem. party is going to look even worse. Having listened to your major candidates I am lead to believe that they are for some continued presence and a gradual pullout that allows for the necessary time to dismantle the war machine and extract the troops as safely as possible. The public has been led to think that there is a magic button and the troops are home the next day. Folks there is a reason Congress's approval rating is 14% and it bodes poorly for your party.
The usual comments about the evil Reps. may be correct but that will not enhance the Dems. in the peoples eyes.
The Dem party isnt losing the support of the people as you say. Clearly the Dems are in favor of change of course in Iraq - thats vividly what the public wants.
Now exactly wht to do, Thats a real enigma but I reiterate the public wants and will take anything but stay the course.
Do you believe that the public demands for the Dems to be Glinda -the good witch of the North and nothing less than that unrealism? I personally wish Jesus would just fly in and fix it all. No magic button- just magic election promises which the public knows is just wishful pipe dreams.
Further the 14% approval rating is largely the legacy of the Bush admin disenfranchisment, or should I say total disconnection of the public from the nation... "for the people".
In essence, the public yearns forjust about any course other than the Bush course...and will accept about anything concerning Iraq.
I dont look for a complete pullout- just a pullback of most ground troops to safe bases and let the fur fly....and then who knows?
Maybe you've heard the joke that Bush and Cheney are driving a car with two Congressional Democrats in the back seat. Bush suddenly drives the car off a cliff and as they're plummeting to the ground, Cheney turns to the two Dems in the back seat and says, " Unless you boys can come up with a solution in the next five seconds, we're all gonna die and it will be your fault".
This is basically the same logic Fred uses in most of his posts. Who knew he was such a comedian?
