Is that rain? No, it's bullets.

I'm watching NBC Nightly News last night and the lead story is about Iraq's soccer team that managed to pull an upset over Saudi Arabia to win the Asian Cup. Feel good story. Good times. Cut to footage of Prime Minister Malaki saying, "these men are from various parts of Iraq, and I admire them for sticking together in the name of Iraq for the pride of Iraq. They are heros." Awesome. Then, the report cuts to footage of celebratory gunfire in the streets and the reporter says, "At least two people were killed today by falling bullets, but there were no car bombs." The number killed by falling bullets from celebratory gunfire is up to 4.

Think about a city from a birds eye view. Think about how much surface area a person's body takes up from above. How many bullets have to be in the air to kill one person let alone 4? Imagine being with someone who is killed by a falling bullet. "Yeah, I heard the Lime Spyder is closing and that su..." Game over.

I'm also interested by the physics of a falling bullet. I wonder how high a bullet shot straight up goes before falling back to earth?

I could get out all the formulas but I am lazy.

A bullet fired in any trajectory other than straight up (which is nearly impossible) will follow a parabola that will reach a maximum height and then reverse direction when the force of gravity exceeds upward acceleration. The interesting factor is that the acceleration parallel to the earth stays the same thru the whole event from time of firing to stopping at the ground.

Depending on the upward angle that the bullet is fired, and your position down range, you may be hit by any degree of acceleration & energy ----but even the least amt would be enough to ouchee.

My uncle used to say that anyone who fires into the air needs his rifle shoved up his ass.

as far as how high - pretty damn high.

How about this: if yo fire a rifle bullet parallel to the earth and simultaneously drop one from the same elevation, they both hit the ground at the same time.

But the one fired parallel is about thousands of feet away from the one dropped.

They have to point out "there were no car bombs." That's what makes this soccer game special. No car bombs.

Ironically I just met a fellow at a funeral today who was struck by a stray bullet while sitting in his living room in Massillon. Been in a wheelchair for the last 15 years as a result of the shooting. They caught the kids that were playing around with the gun but what do you do to them?

They did the "falling bullet" myth on MythBusters. If you *could* get a bullet to go straight up (and come straight back down), it would be tumbling, and thus have a much lower speed. It'd hurt, but it wouldn't break skin.

However, it's pretty much impossible to do that. Even the slightest wind will push the bullet into a parabolic trajectory, even if it's fired exactly vertical. Then, it'll be coming down at something much closer to muzzle velocity, because it'll keep it's orientation and spin (ie, less drag).

There was actually a documented case of someone being killed by celebratory gun fire in San Francisco... two miles away. Killed the person, IIRC. The PoPo got the guy who fired the gun into the air.

Oh, and Kyle - it only takes one bullet and some bad luck. :)

Brian, I would bet good money that a good size bullet, say a .45 dropped straight down on a human head from an airplane - would probably kill.

Its not ever safe to fire a bullet into the air, even a near vertical trajectory

Do you know what the most dangerous day(night) of WWII was?

Ans: The night that all the Gi's on Okinawa heard that Hirohito surrendered. The booze and bullets were flying everwhere. Automatic rifles were fired until the barrels were red hot.
