New Stadium To Be Built In Akron
The Beacon had a great cover story on the new football stadium to be built at The University of Akron. (click picture for a larger view) You can see the artists rendering of the new stadium at the bottom of the picture where Spicer and Exchange intersect. You'll also notice that several new residence halls will be build as part of the complex. This development would do so much to revitalize this part of the city and the contiued growth of the university.

The issue, as the Beacon pointed out, is getting all the land acquired.
Most stadium deals are boondoggles, but this needs to be done. I was in the locker room at the Rubber Bowl a few years ago and it was what you might expect to find in some bombed out stadium in Bosnia. Let's hope the stadium deal doesn't become a huge petri dish of corruption.
Cleveland needs to take notice, and realize if they continue to let crime spiral out of control Akron will become a very attractive alternative. Whenever I'm in Akron I feel like I see 1000x the police I ever see in C-town. Can we trade mayors??
Proenza continues to excel. As the U of A continues its growth and evolution it will aid in a possible revitalization of Akron. For all of its warts it still is a city with far more promise than any other rustbelt town. I would love for the Biomedical research corridor to start shoing progress, as welll as city wide wireless internet. (yes I don't know how to pay for these either)
timfitz, do you know what properties are holding out?
I agree with mencken, the Rubber Bowl is beyond repair, renovation, whatever. It's a cool location that gives visitors a great view of Akron landmarks like the downs and the hanger, but bringing the games to campus is huge benefit. When is groundbreak, and where will I buy my Led Zeppelin bongs once the Odd Corner is demolished?
T-dawg, as Sparky Anderson once said about managers, their most important job is not to trip the players on their way out the dugout. The same is true of Proenza. The guy driving this expansion is Ted Curtis. Proenza is just along for the ride. All of this was on the boards way before Luis showed up.
bloomhuff: I have a couple of bongs I can clean up for you in a bucket of CLR if you get desperate.
My next post may just have to be a "how to make your own waterbong with stuff found around the house" post.
You could just write Led Zeppelin on it with a sharpie, or maybe glue and glitter.
On the crime issue in Cleveland:
I attended a burial in Calvary Cemetary- ClEVELAND East 116th & Miles. We had a group of about 30 cars escorted from Holy Family, Stow to Calvary. As I walked to the gravesite, I saw two young males walking (lurking) amongst some adjacent headstones.
Today, I was told that there is a threat that these stitbirds will rob you cars of purses, whatever while you grieve. Maybe I will move to ASkron also ----NOT
Anyhow, I like Akron, my daughter teaches HS there and I wish the best for AU and the city.
ClassssssSSSSSSSSSSS!
Drugs r bad!!!
T-dawg
The guy who owns Manny's and Aroma is willing to build to change the style of his places but not move. The Odd Corner won't sell, which is understandable because for a head shop you can't beat the location.
UA has 86 properties and needs 29 more.
Anybody know if the new stadium will be able to accommodate a regulation soccer field? What's the capacity?
I ask because the "Cleveland Metro Area" is rumored to be getting a Major League Soccer expansion team in the next few years, and one of the rumors was that the team would play in the Akron area.
It's unusual for MLS to expand into markets where the team won't own the stadium facility, but for the right arrangement, I could see it happening.
Brian, I haven't heard any talk on soccer, but I have heard "mixed use" used a lot in discussions of the facility. Akron probably only has 4-6 home football games a year. That means a huge stadium with all the expense would only be used that many Saturdays if it is only used for football. I'm sure they may do some high school playoffs or something. So, I'd like to see it used for a professional soccer team so it gets some action the rest of the year.
"Mixed use" is code for "permanent stage". Newly constructed MLS venues - usually in the 25k-35k size range - nearly always have stages for concerts, and in fact Crew Stadium here in Columbus is talking about building one. Trucking in temporary stages does significant damage to the turf. And MLS only has 15-18 home dates a year, which still leaves plenty of open dates for other events in the stadium.
Crew Stadium has also hosted the OSU spring game, NFL open practices, high school soccer, the NCAA soccer Final Four, high school football, and concerts in addition to MLS games. I even seem to recall the odd college football game for one of the DIII schools in Central Ohio. Expect much of the same there, otherwise it's not really economical to build a small new stadium for just 4 events a year.
If they can get the land.
Kyle - the Rubber Bowl used to and I believe still hosts a numbe rof other football games outside of UAkron's since most of the APS high schools don't have football stadiums. If this stadium was put where proposed it would be a great venue to host key area HS Football matchups outside of Zips games each year. It could also be a neutral field for playoff games as well. This could also be extended to local soccer as well.
I'd like to see that truck that turns into a fire breathing dinosaur do shows in the new stadium. I googled it and he is called Robosaurus. Here is a video on Youtube.
