Wave To The Cameras

"Some people support the use of surveillance cameras in public places as a way to help solve crimes. Others say these cameras go too far as a government intrusion on personal privacy. What's your opinion? Do you support or oppose the increased use of surveillance cameras in public places?" - ABC News/Washington Post Poll. July 18-21, 2007.

Support / Oppose

All: 71% - 25%
Democrats: 66% - 30%
Republicans:
81% - 16%
Independents:
71% - 23%
Men:
66% - 29%
Women:
75% - 21%

I thought that women and Republicans might be more skeptical of cameras than men and Democrats, but according to this poll that isn't the case. Another related tool from Google is a map feature called Street View. It allows you to see street level views of five U.S. cities in impressive detail. The cameras have caught some interesting images and a site compiled them. I post this poll and the Google Street View information because I am noticing more and more how many cameras are everywhere.

I support more. But more doesn't mean anything crazy.

And the problem is that people like Bush will use them to find out who protests.

and another problem is that it will create another bureaucracy to watch the cameras.

Police should be required to have running cameras and/or audio at all times.

That's a tough one. On one hand, a lot of cameras would be a large deterrent for people who commit crimes and help to catch those who do commit them. On the other, where does the line get drawn? Obviously, Chuck's point that people will use them for shady political reasons is a scary but realistic prospect. I have no doubt that people like Bush would have no scruples about using them in such a way. A larger police presence may be a potential solution, but I'm getting the feeling that a lot of cities just don't have the funding for more police.

Yeah Bush is going to use cameras to find out who is protesting. Are you nuts we are talking about the leader of the US. Oh and just curious to your take on the surges success. I'm sure you are disappointed

I'm not a big fan of the cameras. I do understand their usefulness in crime solving, but I don't think they are a great deterent to crime, nor do I like the idea of some arbitrary branch of the government having next to everything people do in public on camera. If i wanted that I would make myself the star of a "truman show"-like drama.

How can anyone support this?
We already know we can't trust our private phone calls to remain just that, private. The last thing we need is to be filmed by the government.
Do I have to make the cliche 1984 reference?

I would be quick to support cameras, but after six years of the abuse of power and civil rights by the Bush Administration, I am inclined to say no if the federal government has anything at all to do with it.

I guess I think it creates more problems than helps.

But I do support cameras at sporting events, because I think they are most susceptible to major attacks. so i guess that makes me in favor of more, but only in that limited capacity.

but even in that capacity, the building owners can just do it.

so basically i am arguing with myself.

final opinion: no to government doing it, except on government lands, where its their right.

I'm in favor of cameras in certain situations. NPR had a week of interviews with state and city level directors of homeland security. I think it was the Chicago director who talked about cameras. Basically, they ensure that the cameras can not look into windows, etc. and trained only on street corners, parking lots, bus stops, etc. I'm in favor of cameras in certain very PUBLIC location. I'm NOT in favor of the camera that my employers have installed to monitor our cubicles.

From the poll results, it looks like the fear-mongering is still working. People actually want to be watched? Do they realize that the government/Google/whomever is watching them, not just the other guy?

This is frightening.
