Huckabee pulls a Norris
Watching the Republican YouTube debate was like watching creepy-drunk hit on Chili's waitress, or watching your Dad do the Electric Slide, or an exceptionally bad episode of Last Comic Standing.The front runners were lame, clumsy and rambling. The ugliest moments were all Romney's. I literally had to look away. When pressed on whether or not he believed everything in the Bible, I'm pretty sure at one point I heard him say "sure." And when pressed by Anderson on his 1994 'hope for a world where gays roam free' he nearly burst into flames.
Giuliani didn't do much better. McCain had one shining moment about torture, but could never seem to deliver the knock out punch in any exchange. Paul couldn't remember who the Kurds were. And Thompson, who stunk significantly less than the rest, was still his regular boring self. When he talks I hear Charlie Brown's parents talking. Wah Wah, Wah Wah.
Not only did Huckabee survive this clam-up-fest, he landed a spinning roundhouse to the chin of every question that came his way. He was trustworthy. He was confident. He was funny. He was decisive. He was human. The other candidates had better take note, cause God damn that's how you win a debate.

I would consider voting for Huckabee over Hillary, because he is trustworthy and honest. I am disagree with him, but he seems straightforward.

the real shocker was the nerve of Rudy going after Romney for Romney having illegal workers at his home.
1) Romney explained himself very well.

It's funny cause I thought the same thing, just about Romney. I think The Onion summed it up best in their recent headline:

See, I thought Romney looked bad in the debate. I thought he looked way too combative and abrasive in the opening exchange. Giuliani can pull it off as a New Yorker. I thought Romney just looked like a prick.
Overall, I thought it was a terrible debate. It was just infighting and grandstanding. There wasn't any substance. Ron Paul was just nutty. His first answer about some NAFTA highway or something had everyone watching completely confused. John McCain was just going for applause lines, but he nailed Romney on water boarding. Fred Thompson seemed like he woke up from a nap.
I agree that Huckabee had the best performance.

I must confess, Paul did sound like someone's crazy uncle. He's a lot of things, but presidential looking is not one of them.
Sorry to be impulsive and leave a message about something I only watched for 10 minutes because like Robert I just had to look away (actually, we only have one tv and it was my husband and son's turn to watch Star Trek) (ok - we have two tvs but the other is tiny and downstairs with the treadmill), but I thought they were all very, very scary people whom I could never have be my president. Huckabee's eyes - did you see how he used his eyes? He tried to be humble, but his sentences always started out with how humble he isn't.
Not a single one of these candidates stands out as presidential, but I also think a lot of that has to do with the questions and the posturing by the candidates. Come on - think back - even the hokiest debates in the past had far more substance, FAR more.
This placing of faith front and center - given what's going on in this country and around the world? Totally, utterly misplaced - and I fault CNN for pandering.
If I were the candidates, I'd be pissed.
Again.. look how the Republicans have succeeded in moving the argument to the right. Robert sends dough to Ron Paul and Chuck considers voting for Huckabee over Hillary while completely ignoring three very important words: The Supreme Court.
Quit playing footsie with these fucking regressive fundamentalists.

I'm pretty sure the debate was not the first time Jill heard of any of these candidates.
The only thing you learn about a candidate during one of these spelling bees is what their scripted answers are and how well they remember them.
Considering that we decide if a person is a fitting mate in 30 seconds, I think 10 minutes to decide if a personal is a fitting president is actually quite generous.

At least I'm transparent about the length of time I spent watching. You haven't even left your name like the other 14 commenters here, whether real or otherwise.
Ditto what the comments after yours wrote re: ten minutes is 1) more than enough and 2) more than most people take and 3) only part of the time I've been following these candidates.
When you're ready to be honest and transparent, then you can tell me/us why you think ten minutes isn't enough and how else people should spend their time figuring out their choice.

My comment about 30-second-mates was tongue-in-cheek. I do think it takes a good deal of time to chose a candidate, and while I'm sure you've spent much more time than the average Joe watching these guys previous to last night, I have to side with anonymous here... you can't watch 1/12th of the debate and criticize CNN for pandering. He doesn't need to give his name or explain himself any further. He has a simple, indisputable point: you can't say "even the hokiest debates in the past had far more substance, FAR more." when you only watch 10 minutes. This is not worth fighting. Just concede.
About the substance: I (having suffered through all two hours) actually thought that the YouTube format was much better (and more entertaining) than usual. Why? Cause Wolf Blitzer can never ask Giuliani why he mentions 9-11 in every other breath, he needs to be professional. He can however introduce a clip where an average american does so. It frees CNN from the blowback on questionable, risky, direct questions. I love it.

Rather, I would posit that what you and I consider substantive is what's different.

I think Robert Stein hits the nail on the head. Although again, Huckabee was the exception.
Look, I'm a die-hard atheist (some days an anti-theist). I love reading Richard Dawkins. And I've come to blows with many Intelligent Design nuts So trust me when I say, I cringe at the idea of a former minister running our country.
BUT there is no denying that Huckabee shined last night and that he stood out from a pack that otherwise completely fit Stein's description.
I honestly respect Huckabee (although I'd never vote for him).
I forgot to comment on how much I like Norris' holster for his two guns. They are leather straps attached to the guns so he can let them dangle from his sides once he unloads the clip.

Robert - I can appreciate that. I wrote a post last week saying, who is Huckabee? What do I need to know? I did very superficial googling of my own and a couple of Huckabee supporters came by saying go to his website. Now we know better - I'm a blogger - I'm not going to really USE much that is on a politician's website.
So, seriously - what sources do you go to/are you going to, to give you this sense about Huckabee?

I'm not judging Huckabee on policy issues, or even experience. So it's not about where I get my facts, I have none.
What I'm talking about is his stage presence, likability and ability to stay positive and talk about American values in a way that doesn't feel divisive.
As Colbert would say, I check these facts in my gut. My take on him is based 100% on a few strong debate and interview performances.
Last night I saw a second-tier candidate steal the show, get three huge laughs and some of the biggest applause. And through it all, I didn't have the urge to reach through the screen and strangle him. He was appealing to the Republican base, quoting the Bible and getting a gentle nod from me. That is very strange.

"...a new Harvard University survey...also revealed four out of five people believe coverage focuses too much on the trivial..."
Obviously I was speaking to that and not the stage presence thing. I thought Huckabee had googley eyes but it is true - not trying to hide it - I haven't watched him much. And there was one guy up there - I had no idea who he was. I'm guessing it was Duncan Hunter.
Let me ask - are you watching all debates, all the way through, from both sides? Just curious. I'm very uneven in my watching - it seriously has to do with whether it's being streamed on the Internet and/or interferes with my kids' bedtime and Star Trek.

I try to watch everything, but I don't have cable. I watch em on my laptop, assuming that my neighbor's internet signal is strong enough to mooch off of.
Also CNN is just learning how to broadcast via the web and I got an error during the last Dem debate.
TIP: Watch the debates on your computer not your TV, in place of the commercials you get web only commentary which is really amateur.
Also after the debate ends and CNN returns to normal coverage, on the live web-cast they stay in the spin room till the lights get turned off...literally! I watched them interview everyone short of the janitor (including Mr. Norris) and then the lights got turned off on them as they were talking! The reporter said it must be 'last call.' Classic.
About that quote: what people say they want and what actually influences their votes are two very different things. Everyone hates attack ads, and yet they work just the same.
The most aggrivating thing about this debate is the Republicans are going nuts over the gay general who is on the GLBT thing for hillary's campaign.

I took issue with the Keeler Report's attacks on Huckabee as being a "fraud" and not a real conservative. I thought I would share my thoughts here....
Huckabee is more in line with the GOP platform more than any of the top candidates. He is extremely social conservative. More moderate fiscally. And he stands by his choices.
Unlike the other guys that have just 'changed their minds' on nearly EVERY issue important to most GOP voters.
(except Romney really is lying on when he changed his support for abortion. and McCain really is lying about his religion.)
Obviously, you don't have to like Huckabee. But to call him a fraud is embarrassing your judgement.
and to be calling him a fraud because spending went up under his governship seems quite embarrassing, since you have supported GW Bush and the Republican Congress that sent national spending soaring.

- Romney has said his views on abortion were drastically altered on November 9, 2004 after discussing stem cell research with Douglas Melton. Romney cites THAT DAY as the day he turned against abortion.
- However, in a press conference video in May 2005 however, Romney when asked about Massachusetts abortion laws said "I have indicated that as governor, I am absolutely committed to my promise to maintain the status quo with regards to laws relating to abortion and choice"
