My first donation to a Republican
I just gave money to a pro-life, anti-amnesty candidate who wants to abolish the Department of Education. No, I wasn't wooed by the charm that is Tancredo... I'm talking about Ron Paul.
Mr. Paul first got my attention with his Gravel-esc anti-war tirades in the Republican debates. The guy is a Libertarian, a philosophy that many of you know, I have flirted with in the past. Despite the unwillingness of hardcore Libertarians to acknowledge or account for the welfare of minors, I think that the "party" platform is more good than bad. Unlike Dems, they don't ever fall into the trap of pandering to labor unions or associate capitalism/trade with exploitation.
Despite some views that make me cringe (like tax credits for parents who send their kids to religious schools), Ron is one of those rare 'conservative' candidates who holds the Constitution above the Bible as our guiding document. He also has some great/unwavering views:

The Second Amendment
For anyone who hates the two-party system, I recommend throwing a bone to the occasional Libertarian, Green Party candidate or anyone who's not a cookie-cutter elephant or donkey. I love to see these candidates get enough support to remain relevant and get mic time in debates through the primaries, in both parties they act as a sort of irate, no-nonsense Jiminy Cricket.

The catalyst for this was that yesterday I did the online Internet Straw Poll.
The site gives you a dozen multiple choice policy question and at the end tells you who your ideal candidate is. The set of questions is not always the same. I did it twice, getting Obama once and Paul the other time.
I'm really curious to see who Paul will back after the primaries. He has a such a loyal following. Might he endorse Obama over a-gitmo-in-every-garage Romney?

Completely agreed on Paul. He is more of a straight-shooter than Obama. Paul v. Obama would be a great showdown. However, due to Paul's inability to raise funds, this will not come to fruition.
Having a post that cuts against the typical liberal dogma is refreshing, just as it would if the Hannity's and Limbaugh's would do the same.
I don't like Paul, because I want to help government programs to be improved and more efficient. Paul wants them destroyed...and doesn't care of who suffers.
However, knowing Bob and others like him, I can see how his libertarian style is appealing.
Also, his philosophy is more based on true Republican principles than these other GOP clowns. And he is intelligent. No wonder the current Republican Party hates him.
Finally, I do think Paul will run as a third party (libertarian). Just an instinct.

I think there is a flaw in the internet straw poll. I answered their questions honestly, and for my work was rewarded with the news that my ideal candidate was Freaky Freddy Thompson. After i picked up my jaw, i entered some more answers and was told that i could support rudy, obama and someone i've never heard of. at least i didn't get romney. we should use this thing like baseball cards of old days.

I agree that the poll is sketchy, but I do love these types of tests, which at least attempt to connect voters and candidates based on policy (not height and/or windsurfing passions).
Another one that I found a few years ago is: Political Compass. I'm not sure if they've updated it in the last two years, but here were the staff results from January 06
There is nothing libertarian about today's Republican Party so it comes as no surprise to me that Paul isn't gaining much support. I'm with Chuck and don't much care for Paul.
I will say that the first presidential yard sign I have seen in Summit County is a Ron Paul sign. It is on Rt. 18 just west of 77 and before the Crystal Lake Road light. There is also one on Medina Line Road.
Pat Buchanan wrote a much more damning piece against the war in American Conservative Magazine about the same time or earlier as Paul's piece. So what does that mean... Buchanan 2008?

because the Bush/Republicans stand for putting people in charge of Agencies/Departments that are hostile to that agencies very mission. there are countless examples of things like the Mine Inspector being someone from the management side (meaning the goal of Mine Inspecting is compromised, as a giveaway to industry), or people the Secretary of Interior being hostile to the existence of any federally protected lands, or health care officials that are hostile to health care for all Americans.
