Ohio Polling Fascinating and Telling
Quinnipiac University has released a new poll on just Ohio today and it speaks volumes about the Presidential election and in particular Senator Clinton. 41% of the Ohio electorate said they would never vote for Hillary. 46% of married women and 48% of married men said they would never vote for her. I find it interesting that Quinnipiac pollsters polled married people separately. Why were they testing this question? Overall, Ohioans split 44% - 44% on favorable-unfavorable ratings. To give you a comparison, Giuliani was at 40% favorable - 28% unfavorable. The conclusion is that Hillary is as polarizing in Ohio as she is nationally.
There is bad news for Obama supporters. In a head to head match-up, Hillary spanks Obama 42%-17% among Democrats. Edwards comes in third with 14%. I believe these are name ID numbers and once Obama starts campaigning here those number will move. I just think it is time for team Obama to start moving those numbers. Kucinich came in at 4% in his home state where he doesn't spend much time anymore.Other numbers from the poll:
- Ohio voters disapprove 67% - 29% of the job President George W. Bush is doing, his lowest score ever in the state. This isn't really news anymore because he numbers have been so low for so long.
- 39% of the electorate said they would never vote for Giuliani. Could these be conservatives?
- Giuliani leads the GOP race with 27 percent to 14 percent for McCain, 13 percent for Thompson and 11 percent for Romney. Clearly the Republican race is up for grabs.
- Is Gov. Ted Strickland qualified to be Vice-President: 49% no, 29% yes. I suspect these numbers reflect the great job Ted Strickland is doing and the desire of those polled to keep him as our governor.
Unrelated: Akron City Council President Marco Sommerville mistakenly had a loaded .38 in his luggage at Akron Canton Airport yesterday. He was permitted to continue on with his flight and was not arrested. It was reported that he did have a permit for the gun. I completely believe that Sommerville made a mistake in taking his gun in his luggage. I feel bad for him because this is the kind of quarky story that is going to get a lot of press. This story has legs because he is an elected official who had a gun and was permitted to continue on his flight without incident. People will see a double standard.

The question about marriage was asked probably because regardless of your ideology, whether it is liberal or conservative, getting married tends to make a person slightly more conservative. Married people also account for a greater portion of the people that actually vote than single people do.

Lindsay, you make a good point. I just wonder if they were drawing attention to the political reality of the Clinton marriage. I wonder if the people who conducted the poll asked the question as a warning to Democrats to show how Hillary plays with the married. For example, I didn't see numbers on single women and supposedly Hillary is doing well with them.
One reason that poll probaly did the married / not married breakdown is because chief Clinton pollster Mark Penn keeps talking about how many married women would secretly vote for Hillary when they typically vote R
I wouldnt worry about the HRC-Obama Ohio #'s. By the time it matters what Ohio voters think in a primary the nominee will be deicded. most of that is just name recoginition i would bet
It's scary to me that Democrats favor Hillary, but 41% Ohio electorate will REFUSE to vote for her. So if Democrats select Hillary in the primary, she has a HUGE chance of losing the General. Dems are not paying attention.
I hope more Democrats start looking into the options, instead of more of the same. Bush-Clinton-Bush-Clinton doesn't look like progress to me.
