Republicans... Follow Your Leader$
Many things would frustrate me about my party if I were a Republican (including these book covers), but today it would be the resignations of Senator Trent Lott and former Speaker Denny Hastert. Both men unexpectedly submitted their resignations this past Monday. Paul Kane of the Washington Post called it "a bit of historical coincidence" that both men resigned on the same day. Coincidence? It is no coincidence that Hastert and Lott resigned on the same day. They are looking for political cover from each other's resignation. Hastert said he resigned Monday to give Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich time to schedule a special election to fill the vacancy. Lott didn't really give a reason other than to say he wanted to stagger terms with now junior Mississippi Senator Thad Cochran to ensure that the state has long serving Senators. Both men will be out of their offices by December 31st. Why the rush? Ethics reform passed by Democrats requires law makers to wait two years after leaving office before becoming a lobbyist. These new rules go into effect January 1st.Lott and Hastert have decided that K Street salaries are more important than serving their constituents and the Republican Party. They have decided that schmoozing for the agenda of high paying clients is more important than fighting for the principals of the political party that has invested so much in each of them. Denny Hastert's resignation means the Republicans have to fight for his Congressional seat in Illinois instead of having him parade around the country raising money for other candidates. The same is true, but to a lesser extent in Mississippi. Governor Hayley Barbour will appoint a replacement for Lott, but there will undoubtedly be a contested primary whenever that seat is up for election.
As a Democrat, I think this is awesome. For all those who say this has been a do nothing Congress, look at these ethics reforms as one of many accomplishments. These reforms are so comprehensive that they forced at least these two resignations. Maybe these announcements are the beginning of a mass exodus? I hope so.

The title of Lott's book was actually abbreviated by the publisher for aesthetic reasons. The original title was:
Herding Fat Cats and Crumb Bums
Lotts replacememt slpecial election is mirred in legal questions because he has to resign before Jan.1 in order to avoid the new rules. I alawys had respect for him if for no other reason than he did not enrich himnself at the public trough but in the end he is but another of our leaders that will feed at the trough.
Lott is entitled to work on K Street or do whatever he wants in the private sector. He has been in Congress since 1973. He has done more than enough for his constituents over the years and really helped his state in the Katrina aftermath, which is one of the reasons he ran again in 2006. It isnt fair to say that salaries are more important to someone than their party or their state when they have been in Congress for over 4 decades.
I am not a huge fan of people winning elections and then resigning shortly after, but in Lott's case I have no problem. What is wrong with him wanting to make some money - espeically in the light of the fact his home was destroyed in the Hurricane.

Please. They have done almost nothing and moving the lobbying waiting period from one year to two isnt that big of a deal.
Lott quit due to a gay sex scandal (okay, probably not, but that is a rumor....and knowing he was in the Larry Craig singing quartet, it sounds possible)
and Fred, I would argue that Lott has enriched himself at the public trough his whole life - every real pay check he has made since he finished college has been from the government/taxpayers.
and while I am mocking Lott, remember: He was a Democrat....until they started supporting Civil Rights.

Because you are talking about guys who have dedicated their lives to government service. What is wrong with them wanting to make some money whenever it is? I dont see your logic. What is the difference if they resign now and wait two years to lobby as opposed to one year? It doesnt change your charge that Lott is not interested in Mississippi only himself.
Chuck, saying that Lott enriched himself through the taxpayer that argument could be used for every single person who is employed by the government in some way.
I just disagree with every comment here...a guy who has worked in the government since 1973 should be praised for his service, whether that person is a Democrat or Trent Lott. Senators dont make a whole lot when you cosider they have to live two places and one of them is an expensive place to live like DC. I just think it is a cheap shot at Lott. I think most of us would take an opportunity to increase our salary 10 fold.
Ben, I don't think it is ethical to run for re-election asking for a 6 year term and leave because you need to cut out before a deadline so you can become a lobbyist. Health reasons, family emergency, or pretty much anything else... fine. If he wanted to become a lobbyist he should not have asked the voters of Mississippi for 6 more years.
