My new job - Republican Strategist
While I don't have any plans to give up my day job, I find myself thinking more and more about strategies for the Republican campaigns. It seems to me that if McCain wins the nomination, Huckabee is an obvious choice as a VP. I don't pretend to be the first to make this prediction. I imagine there will be more buzz surrounding this in the next few days, given the two candidate race for the Rs. McCain needs to appeal more to the evangelical base that so strongly supported Bush in 2000 and 2004. Even with his recent momentum, he still needs the support of the Republican critics who contend he's not a "real republican." And then, there's the Senator thing. With a governor on board, McCain can rebut the attacks (which he unwittingly helped perpetuate) that he's weak on economics "the issue of economics is not something I've understodd as well as I should. I've got Greenspan's book", by pointing to his VP's experience in somewhat successfully running a state (and improving the roads so significantly that even Trucker Magazine took note!- that was an admitted cheap shot), McCain can deflect some of the criticism of his lack of economic prowess.

The people who dont like McCain are mostly the same people who dont like Huckabee. He couldnt make a worse choice. I would rather he took Bob Taft.
I would like to see Tim Pawlenty of MN, Giuliani, or Thompson...but I dont see him picking another old white guy who was a Senator.
Of course I would love to see him pick Romney, but since he likes every other American more than Romney I dont think that will happen
Looks like I will have to vote for McCain. One thing that would assure I would vote third party would be if he took Huckabee.

I am interested to know what you base this on? It seems that the McCain camp thinks that if Huckabee dropped out, most of the vote Huckabee gets would likely go to Romney.
McCain did nothing to squelch rumors that Huckabee may be a VP prospect for him when he said - at the Florida victory party- "Gov. Huckabee and his supporters, as always, brought to this campaign conviction and passion and something we don't always have enough of in these contests: good humor and grace."
A % of the Christain right would refuse to back Romney the Mormon but some Huckabee supporters would go with Romney because of Mcain's liberal bent and others because of his stealth approach to passing the bill,then misrepresenting the contents of the bill and finally just because many people oppose the concept.
Yeah, exactly. So thats why Huckabee stays in the race - to dillute the anti-McCain vote. The people who are going to back Huck may go Romney. He could help Romney by dropping out so he wont.
The people who dont like Huckabee also dont like McCain, generally speaking.
Peggy Noonan has a crisis of faith:
"On the pundit civil wars, Rush Limbaugh declared on the radio this week, "I'm here to tell you, if either of these two guys [Mr. McCain or Mike Huckabee] get the nomination, it's going to destroy the Republican Party. It's going to change it forever, be the end of it!"
This is absurd. George W. Bush destroyed the Republican Party, by which I mean he sundered it, broke its constituent pieces apart and set them against each other. He did this on spending, the size of government, war, the ability to prosecute war, immigration and other issues.
Were there other causes? Yes, of course. But there was an immediate and essential cause".

Also, I heard this morning on NPR that evangelicals make up 14-17% of the electorate and that they are inclined not to vote if they don't like either candidate. If I'm the Republicans, I find a reason for them to come out. They, in LARGE part, helped elect Reagan and W.
Mencken- I completely agree with this portion of Noonan's article. If anything, I see McCain bringing Republicans back to their center.
Clinton won big because he ran on a centrist platform.
Republicans were furious with him because they thought he was stealing their thunder. McCain and Hillary both know that a centrist has the best shot, especially this time around. Americans want to move to the middle ( which is liberal to Rushbo ) they're not inclined to move much more left of that.
That McCain poses with evangelicals is just so much photo op and the usual election pandering.
Bush stated many times that he wasn't into nation building and the first thing he did was plow into Iraq uninvited. It's not what they say, it's what they do.

I agree Bush has done his best to destroy the party and McCain's nomination will futher damage the weakened party that currently has little coherent philiosphy other than to get elected.
Sophie, I agree Huckabee seems logical, but I also know the Hannity/Ben wing of the party will be even more mad.
I don't have time to post on the Obama rally in Phoenix last night, except to say:
1)13,000 attended at 5pm...i was very surprised at the turnout.
2) AZ Governor Janet Napolitano seems like a very possible VP pick. A bit less likely with McCain being from AZ too, but she really is a great speaker and a pretty good Governor (working pretty well with a Republican dominated legislature)

I get McCain's downside, but if listening to Romney and Huckabee speak doesn't have you looking for a condo in Manitoba, nothing will.

How you get, "I might chose him as a running mate" is beyond me. McCain was being gracious.
I'll go on the record as saying McCain will not pick ANYONE for VP who was in the running for the nomination.
russ, you may be right. but huckabee is certainly and consciously helping McCain in hopes of being VP.

To your question. Huckabee's calling is to be on stage in Branson Mo. delivering one liners. There is no person in the race that embodies or is articulating the principles behind conservative policies(I know I have opened the door for endless derision--take the high road and let it go). McCain while at this point appears to be the strongest candidate many conservatives are more interested in a party that embodies conservative principles. For 8 years we have watched a man without conservative values destroy the image of the party. How could one has even less belief in conservative values not further hurt the party? If all a party stands for is winning elecions I will pass. Sometimes it is more important to be right than win

McCain is Pro Life, Pro War, Pro Surge, Pro Tax Cuts, Pro Gun. How is this guy not considered a conservative?
McCain is not pro tax cuts.
As a side note, the whole "Pro Tax" cut sound bite I also think this is a gross oversimplification of the basis of Republican fiscal principles. My interpretation was one of balanced budget (1st)and excising waste (via tax cuts) thereby increasing govt efficiency, allowing more money to flow in the marketplace unfettered by bureaucracy. Unfortunately that sensible policy has been bastardized.
He was a vocal opponent to tax cuts originally but changed his mind to pander to the fiscal republicans. He also is liberal on border security, which is a bigger issue than it gets credit for, especially among rank & file voters who aren't involved in block voting
as a democrat, i'd like to see the repugnicans run bob 'the education governor' taft and rick '{definition edited by user for cause}' santorum for prez/vp...LOL what if they held an election and no one showed up...

On Santorum: How quick the public got fed up with all the bashing! Fuuny thing, when you pit one group against another in political demagoguery (Santorum) you --in the end, deservedly get a very large group of enemies.
Just think back on King Karl Rove's reign. Seems that his whole strategy hinged about the old "I am here to SAVE you from THEM"
Maybe on the bright side --Karl set the stage for a period (length unknown) of some degree of Govt responsibility to the People.

I think that McCain marches to a different tune. What exactly it is , I cant put my finger on it but he being raised by a USN Admiral and his grandfather a USN Admiral must have taught some degree of service to country and some other decent principles.

That would effectively shift the burden off the employer to provide HC.
He has some other ideas that seem positive but then - they all do....the big hurdle is the effective Godzilla Ins & Pharm Lobby
