To be entitled to register to vote in Ohio, a person must meet all of the following requirements:
- Citizen of the United States
- 18 years of age or more at the next General (November) election
- Resident of Ohio
- Not incarcerated in a penal institution for a felony conviction
- Not adjudicated incompetent for voting purposes
- Not convicted a second time of any provision of Revised Code Title 35

All established permanent voter registration locations throughout Summit County. These include: 1) any public high school or vocational school; 2) at the office of any Bureau of Motor Vehicles; 3) at offices of designated agencies which provide public assistance or disability programs; 4) the County Fiscal Office; 5) any public library in Summit County.

Just reading those rules reminded me of a discussion I just had today. It is deplorable that almost all States bar felons from voting.

Ohio does not prevent individuals convicted of a felony from voting. I remind my clients of this often and encourage them to register to vote. Only persons convicted of multiple offense of election fraud are barred from voting.
These statistics are a couple of years old but, only 8 states deny felons the right to vote for life (with some exceptions allowing the right to petition for restoration of voting rights). However,48 states deny the right to vote to at least some felons; and 33 states deny the right to vote to individuals on parole.
I do, however, agree that it is unacceptable to deny the right to vote to anyone who have paid for their crime (e.g. served time, completed probation/parole).

Chandra, thanks for the distinction. I know that in AZ, first time felons are allowed to vote after the prison time and after your 2nd felony, you are done for good. Sounds about the same as Ohio.
However, I still find it all deplorable. A person in prison should be allowed to vote. They should have a right to say, 'this law i am in prison for is unjust'
More people should vote absentee. It make things so much earlier.

I voted absentee once but it wasnt the same. I actually like going to do it in person. Who knows if your vote will get lost in the mail or the person opening the enevlope will just throw your ballot away because they disagree with your picks. Doubtful, but possible.
I voted absentee for all the years that I was in college out-of-state. It's awesome to be able to assert your right to vote even though you can't be there but it does lack something. I love going to the polls, standing in line and going into the booth (or standing at the weird little folding table now). It just *feels* more like being a part of the democratic process. Also, the absentee ballots used to be weird punch-out things with a piece of styrofoam behind it. I do, however, hope that Ohio decides to make it easier for citizens to vote absentee.
