The Rockets' Red Glare

Last night some friends and I watched Akron's fireworks display from the roof of the United building downtown. It was a really cool view and an overall fun time. I took my camera and a small tripod and tried to do some long exposure shots of the fireworks, but the only shot I got that I really liked was this one I took with my phone.

Why do suppose that happened?
I fumbled around with technical stuff and didn't concentrate on composition. Only after I was done messing with camera, tripod, shutter speed, exposure, ISO, timer, etc, did it occur to me that it would be cool to put the silhouettes in the foreground (a suggestion from a friend). So I just snapped a few at the end with my phone while a long exposure was going.
I like the silhouette style.
