West Side Market

There are way to many neat places in Northeast Ohio that I've never been to - I've decided its time to start changing that. So on Saturday I went up to the West Side Market in Ohio City to find out what all the hype was about. There has been a public market on the site since 1840, the current market house was built in 1912 and is a National Historic Landmark. The selections of different meats, produce and other food stuffs was pretty cool.
Even though I've drank many a bottle of Great Lakes I had never been to their brewery/restaurant/pub (which is across the street from the market). I tried out a couple of the beers that they don't sell outside of the restaurant and had one of the best burgers ever(I know you people say stuff like that all the time but these burgers truly were amazing).

Glad to see you're venturing outside the 330. I kid, I kid. Great choice to visit. Who was your server?

One can never visit Great Lakes too many times, or the West Side Mkt for that matter. Nearby Great Lakes is another brilliant spot: Bier Markt--good pizza, and beers, of course.
By the way, Tim, I too was in Ohio City this weekend, but I failed to make it to Great Lakes. Now I am crying.
I love the shot outside the market, and the late night one with the discarded boxes and trash.
I too, sing America.
I am the darker brother.
They send me to eat in the kitchen
When company comes,
But I laugh,
And eat well,
And grow strong.
Tomorrow,
I'll be at the table
When company comes.
Nobody'll dare
Say to me,
"Eat in the kitchen,"
Then.
Besides,
They'll see how beautiful I am
And be ashamed--
I, too, am America.

Its funny you were in Ohio City too Greg. At the West Side Market I ran into Georgia Szalay(who I work with in the Summer) and a friend's mom. At Great Lakes Laura swore she saw my roommate and his girlfriend drive by - in a few minutes we saw them in the gift shop and then they joined us for a beer. They were on their way back from a Lake Erie Monsters game.
Tim, that's quite nonsense, because I ran into one of my friends--in fact, I nearly RAN INTO him as he crossed the street. I stopped my car to say hello and save his life.
Our server was a skinny, dark-haired dude on the younger side. He switched us over to an older lady because his shift was ending - on the way out we saw him sitting at the bar.
Tim- I used to date a girl that works there. Just curious. Its common to see the employees sitting at the bar. 1 free shift beer. My buddy Danny is a bottler there too. Great company to work for.

I love the West Side Market. I can run there at luch during the winter and pick things up and just leave them in my trunk until I get them home.
There is a bar in that neighborhood on Columbus Rd, off W 20th that is amazing. It's called the Velvet Tango Room and they specialize in pre-prohibition drinks. Highest quality - they make their own mixers. It's a real step back in time to the speakeasies of prohibition. Pricy, but worth a visit at happy hour where a drink will run $10. Best to have two there, then hit the ABC Tavern on W. 25th for $1.50 Pabst Blue Ribbon tallboys!
Russ - that definitely sounds like something worth checking out - thanks for the tip.
Russ, I actually went there last summer for my buddy Jeff's bachelor party. We sat in that back room with all the communist paraphernalia. Very cool scene.
